A new fellowship has been established to support graduate students in engineering at Texas A&M University in memory of Dr. Benjamin F. Marek, affectionately known as “Benny” to his family and friends. The Dr. Benjamin F. “Benny” Marek Memorial Endowed Graduate Fellowship was initiated by his son, Matthew Marek, a 1989 Texas A&M graduate, to honor his father’s legacy while assisting future engineers in their academic pursuits.

From Humble Beginnings to Academic Excellence

Benny Marek grew up in West, Texas, in a Czech community. He faced challenges early in his life, starting school without knowledge of the English language. His identical twin brothers, Albert and Alfred, paved the way to higher education, both earning degrees in aerospace engineering. After serving in the Air Force, Benny attended Texas A&M, where he earned two bachelor’s degrees in the late 1950s, followed by a master’s degree and a doctorate in petroleum engineering. His master’s thesis focused on a comparison of static and dynamic measurements of Poisson’s ratio in rocks, while his doctoral dissertation explored factors influencing acoustic wave velocities in sandstone.

Benny’s professional career at Mobil (now ExxonMobil) allowed him to travel extensively across South America, Europe, and the Middle East. Despite his considerable achievements, including numerous patents and accolades, those close to him knew him simply as Benny or Dad, emphasizing his humble character.

Matt Marek, inspired by his father’s dedication, followed in his footsteps by studying petroleum engineering at Texas A&M. He fondly recalls attending Aggie football games with his father, who was known for bringing newspapers and donuts to share with friends. Today, Matt remains a loyal season ticket holder, continuing the family tradition of supporting the university.

Creating Opportunities for Future Generations

The newly established fellowship aims to support graduate students facing financial challenges in their pursuit of advanced engineering degrees. Matt Marek describes the scholarship as a tribute to his father’s commitment to education and a means to foster new opportunities for aspiring engineers.

“The purpose of this scholarship is not only to give back to the university,” Matt stated. “It’s also a way for me to honor my father and his legacy.” He emphasized that discussions with university faculty highlighted how his father’s educational journey impacted their family, motivating him to create a fund that encourages future success and philanthropy within the Aggie community.

Matt envisions the fellowship as a way to inspire future generations of Aggies, fostering a cycle of achievement and giving. “I see this as a chance to start a new legacy for someone else,” he remarked, hopeful that the story of his father’s humble beginnings will resonate with every recipient of the fellowship.

In establishing this fellowship, the Marek family not only honors Benny’s memory but also contributes to a broader mission. Fellowships at Texas A&M facilitate collaboration between faculty, students, and industry mentors, equipping graduate students with the resources they need to excel and make a significant impact in their fields.

For those interested in supporting the College of Engineering and its departments or seeking more information on how to contribute, the university encourages contacting its development officers. The establishment of the Dr. Benjamin F. Marek Memorial Endowed Graduate Fellowship serves as a powerful reminder that humble beginnings can lead to remarkable achievements and lasting legacies.
