Fort Worth ISD Faces State Takeover Decision in Coming Months
The Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) is grappling with the potential for a state takeover following persistent academic challenges. This situation prompted a visit from Texas Education Agency (TEA) Commissioner Mike Morath this week, as the TEA has indicated that state intervention may be necessary.
In a letter dated May 5, Morath informed Superintendent Karen Molinar and Board President Roxanne Martinez that the Leadership Academy at Forest Oak Sixth Grade, which closed after the 2023-24 school year, failed to meet state standards for five consecutive years. Under Texas law, a campus that receives five straight failing ratings is subject to state intervention. This could lead to a state takeover or the closure of additional schools within the district.
Morath’s visit included a stop at William James Middle School, which has maintained an “F” grade since 2021. During discussions with reporters, Morath emphasized the TEA’s commitment to ensuring students have access to quality education. “Our job is to make sure you have access to a great school,” he stated.
Superintendent Molinar, who took over leadership in 2024, expressed optimism about recent improvements within the district. In an interview with CBS News in August, she highlighted the changes implemented to foster growth. “Morath really needs to make a decision,” she said. “It’s not just around that 2023 score. It really is about what changes are we putting in place as a large urban system to sustain this progress and actually accelerate it.”
The situation underscores a broader concern regarding educational standards and accountability in Texas. The TEA’s actions reflect a commitment to maintaining educational quality, as state law mandates specific actions when a district fails to meet performance benchmarks.
As Fort Worth ISD awaits Morath’s decision, the community remains hopeful for a solution that will improve educational outcomes. The potential takeover or further closures could significantly impact students and families, making the stakes particularly high for all involved.
The coming months will be critical as the TEA deliberates its next steps and Fort Worth ISD continues its efforts to enhance academic performance.
