Meta’s Quest 3 Outsells Nintendo Switch 2 on Amazon in Holiday Rush
Meta’s headsets, the Quest 3 and Quest 3S, are currently outperforming Nintendo’s newly released Switch 2 on Amazon. Despite being launched over a year ago, the Quest models have collectively sold **154,000 units** in the past 30 days, surpassing the Switch 2’s **150,000 units**, which debuted in June 2023. This striking performance during the Black Friday shopping week highlights a significant shift in consumer preferences in the gaming market.
Sales Performance Highlights
The sales figures reveal a competitive landscape. The Quest 3 and Quest 3S models have not only outpaced the Switch 2 but also left older consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X behind, with these systems selling fewer units in the same timeframe. Currently, on Amazon’s ‘Best Sellers’ list in the Video Games category, the Quest 3S (128GB) ranks at **#6**, while the Switch 2 bundle follows closely at **#7**. The PlayStation 5 sits at **#13**, the Quest 3 (512GB) at **#24**, and the Xbox Series X at **#60**.
The price point likely plays a critical role in this sales success. The Quest 3S, currently priced at **$250** for the holiday season, offers a more affordable entry compared to the Switch 2’s **$400** manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP). This price difference may be a driving factor for consumers seeking value during the busy shopping season.
Market Dynamics and Future Prospects
While the sales figures are impressive, they also raise questions about retention rates for Meta’s devices. Despite an estimated **tens of millions** of Quest headsets sold, the number of active users remains significantly lower than that of leading game consoles. Meta’s approach of subsidizing prices to stimulate sales has led to considerable losses in its Reality Labs division since its inception.
In an effort to improve user experience and software quality, Meta has announced plans to enhance its headset offerings. However, there are concerns that these improvements may be accompanied by price increases, which could dampen the strong sales momentum the company has enjoyed.
Interestingly, sales of the latest Quest generation appear to be slightly reduced compared to last year. Historically, Quest sales tend to peak around December 23rd, suggesting that a further spike in sales might still occur as the holiday approaches. However, the current trajectory indicates a need for Meta to focus on retaining customers to ensure long-term success in the competitive gaming market.
As the gaming industry evolves, the performance of devices like the Quest 3 and Switch 2 will continue to shape consumer choices, and companies will need to adapt to maintain their relevance and profitability.
