ESPN to Launch Standalone Streaming Service on August 21

ESPN is set to unveil its highly anticipated standalone streaming service on August 21, 2023. This launch coincides with the debut of FOX‘s own streaming platform, which will also feature live sports. The new service aims to provide fans with an extensive sports viewing experience while offering bundle options with other popular streaming services.
The dedicated ESPN streaming service will be priced at $29.99 per month. This pricing model allows subscribers to access a wide array of content, including all of ESPN’s linear networks—such as ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SECN, ACCN, and ESPN Deportes. Additionally, the service will include ESPN on ABC, ESPN+, ESPN3, SECN+, and ACCNX, covering a staggering 47,000 live events each year.
Flexible Subscription Plans and Bundling Options
Designed for flexibility, ESPN’s Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) service offers two plans. The unlimited plan, priced at $29.99 per month, grants fans access to a comprehensive lineup of ESPN’s programming. Subscribers will enjoy not only live sports but also on-demand replays, studio shows, and original programming. Notable studio shows available include SportsCenter, Get Up, and First Take, among others.
In a noteworthy bundling opportunity, ESPN’s unlimited plan can be combined with subscriptions to Disney+ and Hulu for a promotional price of $29.99 per month for the first year. This strategy is expected to attract a broader audience by providing enhanced value through combined offerings.
All subscribers, whether through ESPN DTC or traditional Pay TV providers, will benefit from live and on-demand access to ESPN’s extensive library, which features acclaimed content such as the 30 for 30 films and various ESPN Originals.
Strategic Moves Ahead of Football Season
In addition to the streaming service launch, ESPN and the NFL have been engaged in significant negotiations as the football season approaches. Recent developments include the NFL acquiring a 10% stake in ESPN, reflecting the growing partnership between the two entities. This collaboration is poised to expand ESPN’s coverage of NFL games, enhancing its offerings for sports fans.
With the launch of its standalone streaming service and strategic partnerships, ESPN is positioned to redefine the sports viewing experience, creating more options for fans while maintaining its status as a leader in sports broadcasting. The upcoming launch on August 21 marks a significant milestone in the evolution of how sports content is consumed.
