A recent clinical trial suggesting that apple cider vinegar could aid weight loss has been formally retracted by the BMJ Group. The retraction was announced on March 15, 2024, following concerns about the reliability of the study’s findings, which had initially claimed significant weight loss benefits among participants.

The study was conducted in Lebanon and involved 120 adolescents and young adults categorized as overweight or obese. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups: three groups consumed varying doses of diluted apple cider vinegar daily, while the fourth group received a placebo. According to the original publication, individuals consuming apple cider vinegar lost between 13 and 17 pounds over a 12-week period, along with reported improvements in blood glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol levels.

However, the BMJ Group soon faced scrutiny regarding the statistical methods used in the study. Initially, critiques were published alongside the study, but further investigation revealed more serious issues. After consulting independent statisticians, the BMJ Group found that the original authors’ analyses could not be replicated. The review identified “implausible values” within the dataset and raised questions regarding the randomization process of the participants.

Helen Macdonald, the Publication Ethics and Content Integrity Editor at BMJ Group, stated, “Tempting though it is to alert readers to an ostensibly simple and apparently helpful weight loss aid, at present the results of the study are unreliable.” She emphasized that the findings should no longer be referenced in any future reporting.

The authors of the study attributed the discrepancies to honest errors in data handling and have accepted the decision to retract their work. Despite this retraction, the discourse surrounding apple cider vinegar as a weight loss solution has been ongoing, with minimal scientific evidence supporting its efficacy.

While the allure of quick weight loss solutions like apple cider vinegar continues to capture public interest, health experts maintain that sustainable weight loss primarily relies on comprehensive lifestyle changes.
