Beloved Teacher Kathleen Giacalone Passes Away at 88

Kathleen Ann Giacalone, a dedicated educator and cherished community member, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, at the age of 88. Her life was marked by a deep commitment to teaching and a passion for travel during her retirement years.

Born on April 24, 1937, in San Pedro, California, Kathleen was the daughter of Vincent and Antoinette Vitalich. She later moved to Lomita with her husband, Rosario (Jack) Giacalone, where they built a life together. Kathleen devoted 39 years to her career as an elementary school teacher, inspiring countless children and leaving a lasting impact on her students and colleagues alike.

Legacy of Love and Service

Kathleen is survived by her husband, Jack; her daughter, ToniLynn (Tomo) Meek; her son, Paul (Kelly) Giacalone; and four grandchildren, Tommy, Anthony, Jacquelyn, and Gianna. Additionally, she is remembered by numerous nieces and nephews who cherished her warmth and guidance.

In her retirement, Kathleen developed a passion for traveling, exploring new places and cultures. Her adventurous spirit and love for learning continued to enrich her life and those around her.

Memorial Contributions and Funeral Arrangements

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Kathleen’s name to organizations that held special meaning for her, including Shriners Children’s, St. Jude’s Research Hospital, Disabled American Veterans, and the San Pedro Peninsula Cancer Guild.

A Funeral Mass will be held in her honor on December 2, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Mary Star of the Sea Church. The community is invited to join in celebrating Kathleen’s life and the positive impact she had on so many.

Kathleen Giacalone’s legacy of compassion, dedication, and love for education will continue to inspire those who knew her. Her passing leaves a profound void in the lives she touched, and she will be deeply missed.
