Yael van der Wouden Wins 2025 Women’s Prize for Fiction

In June 2025, Yael van der Wouden received the prestigious Women’s Prize for Fiction for her debut novel, The Safekeep. This gripping historical narrative has impressed readers and critics alike, showcasing van der Wouden’s exceptional talent in crafting intimate and compelling scenes.
Insights from the Award-Winning Author
In a recent interview with Literary Hub, van der Wouden shared her thoughts on the recognition, her writing habits, and the cultural influences that shape her work. When asked who she most wanted to read her book, she humorously mentioned Esther Perel, the renowned psychologist. “I made a joke at a recent event that I want Mother to tell me I did well and hey, I stand by it,” she said, playfully addressing the esteemed author.
Van der Wouden also expressed her excitement about the vast array of books she has received since her publication. “People start sending you books that you think you’ll enjoy based on what you’ve written,” she noted. She highlighted her recent favorite, Jo Harkin’s The Pretender, describing it as an emotionally resonant read that left her wanting more.
Writing Process and Challenges
Reflecting on her writing journey, van der Wouden remarked on her evolution as a writer. Initially a night owl, she shifted to early morning writing during her teaching years. Now, she prefers writing in the afternoons, which she credits to having more flexible time. “The trick is to do it often and do it badly and lower the bar of entry for yourself when it comes to opening that document,” she advised, emphasizing the importance of persistence in the craft.
Addressing the common struggle of writer’s block, van der Wouden shared her strategy: “I put the project down for a few months and I read and watch movies and I go to a museum.” This approach allows her to recharge creatively, enabling her to return to her work with renewed energy. She believes that stepping away can often lead to fresh insights and inspiration.
Among her literary influences, she frequently revisits the works of E.M. Forster and Jane Austen. “I always have a good time picking up one of the Austens,” she stated, highlighting Emma and Pride & Prejudice as her go-to rereads.
In addition to her literary pursuits, van der Wouden’s life is enriched by her mother’s artwork, which she describes as a significant part of her cultural diet. “My mom’s landscapes capture nature in a way that almost makes you feel like a voyeur,” she reflected. This personal connection to art underscores the influence of her upbringing on her creative expression.
Van der Wouden currently teaches creative writing and comparative literature, although she is taking a break to focus on various book-related activities. “Usually it’s me and a classroom of students who didn’t fully sign up for a lecture on grass, but that’s what they’re getting,” she joked, illustrating her engaging teaching style.
The best writing advice she has ever received encapsulates her approach: “Do it often, do it badly if you must, just keep doing it.” This mantra, coupled with the encouragement to connect with peers, forms the foundation of her writing philosophy. “Find a like-minded group of aspiring writers and run with them,” she advised, emphasizing the benefits of collaboration and support within the writing community.
As Yael van der Wouden continues to gain recognition for her work, her insights into the writing process and the importance of community resonate with emerging writers and established authors alike. With her debut novel earning such acclaim, it will be intriguing to see how her career unfolds in the coming years.
