A stunning 60-foot blue spruce tree has arrived in downtown Stillwater, marking the beginning of the festive season with the annual Hometown for the Holidays’ Twinkle Party and tree lighting scheduled for Saturday, December 2, 2025. The impressive tree, weighing approximately 6,800 pounds, was donated by Aamodt’s Apple Farm, located in nearby Grant.

The tree’s journey began when its owner, Chris Aamodt, decided to offer it to the city after receiving a request from Mayor Ted Kozlowski for a holiday display tree. Originally planted by Aamodt’s grandfather, Thor Aamodt, in the 1960s, the tree was initially 68 feet tall. Chris Aamodt recalls his grandfather planting the tree, which he refers to as a significant part of his family’s legacy.

“We believed the tree would need to be cut down in 40 to 50 years due to its proximity to the barns,” Aamodt said. “But my grandfather seemed to have a plan for it.”

Although the tree was initially deemed too large for the space at Lowell Park, city officials adapted and ensured the new Chestnut Street Plaza could accommodate this magnificent tree, which Aamodt jokingly noted could rival the iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.

The logistics of transporting the tree involved significant coordination. Jeff and Missy Hause from JAM Freedom oversaw the operation, which included assistance from several local companies, such as Big Sky Crane Co., McCallie’s Tree Service, and Miller Excavating. The tree was successfully cut down and transported to its new home at the plaza.

The Twinkle Party festivities are set to commence at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in North Lowell Park, with Santa Claus making a special appearance by fire truck around 5:00 p.m.. The ceremonial lighting of the tree will take place at 5:30 p.m., promising an enchanting evening for families and residents.
