The iconic Vogue Theater in San Francisco is set to unveil its newly restored neon marquee, a significant moment for both the venue and the Presidio Heights neighborhood. Mayor Daniel Lurie will preside over a ribbon-cutting ceremony and activate the historic sign on December 3, 2023, at 7:00 PM, located at 3290 Sacramento Street. Following the ceremony, attendees will be treated to a complimentary screening of the classic film “SAN FRANCISCO,” originally released in 1936.

The marquee’s restoration breathes new life into its original 1940s neon design, thanks to the generous support from the Miner/Anderson Family Foundation, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle. The restoration project, led by Jim Rizzo of Neon Works, took five months to complete. The team focused on replacing transformers and revitalizing the neon tubing, while salvaging as much as they could from the original installation. Representatives from CinemaSFBay highlighted the importance of retaining the original color scheme to preserve the marquee’s historic charm.

A Cultural Landmark Reimagined

This restoration goes beyond mere aesthetics; it represents a revival of neighborhood identity. Adam Bergeron, a member of the operations team at the Vogue, expressed excitement about the project, calling it “a thrilling milestone for us and the Vogue.” The theater, which first opened in 1912 and adopted its current name in 1939, has long been a beloved cultural hub for movie lovers and local residents alike.

The revitalized marquee is more than just a sign; it symbolizes the resilience and history of a community that values its cultural landmarks. As the neon lights flicker back to life, they will not only illuminate Sacramento Street but will also serve as a reminder of the vibrant history that the Vogue Theater embodies.

The grand reopening is poised to attract both long-time fans and newcomers eager to experience the theater’s storied past. This initiative reflects a broader effort to preserve and celebrate San Francisco’s unique cultural heritage, ensuring that such landmarks continue to engage and inspire future generations. With the support of dedicated organizations and community members, the Vogue Theater stands ready to shine once again.
