Sampson County NAACP Banquet Celebrates Unity and Progress

The recent Sampson County NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet highlighted the ongoing commitment to equality and justice in the community. Held on Saturday, this event showcased the collaborative efforts of individuals from various backgrounds and marked a significant occasion in the county’s social calendar. The banquet serves not only as a fundraiser but also as a platform for fostering unity in the pursuit of civil rights.
Lee Byam, chair of the Freedom Fund Committee and co-chair of the Community Coordination Committee, played a pivotal role in organizing the event. Other committee members included Maie Parker, branch assistant treasurer; JoAnn Howard, coordinator of the banquet booklet; Luther Moore, chair of the Scholarship Committee; and Bernice Cooper, executive committee member. Their collective efforts were instrumental in ensuring the banquet’s success, reflecting the commitment of the local NAACP chapter to its mission.
The 2025 Freedom Fund Banquet attracted significant support from the community, demonstrating a shared commitment to addressing societal injustices. Over the years, participation from diverse sectors has underscored the belief that the fight for equality is indeed a collective endeavor. As the Sampson County NAACP, which was established on September 9, 1955, continues to champion civil rights, it stands as part of the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization.
In a statement, Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the National NAACP, emphasized the importance of sustained efforts towards making the nation equitable for all citizens. He noted, “The work of making our country just and equal for every American is an ongoing project that requires those of us who can fight to do so in our time.” This sentiment resonates deeply within the Sampson County community, where local efforts strive to engage future generations in civil rights advocacy.
As the banquet concluded, Larry Sutton, a retired educator from Clinton High School, urged community members to remain active in civil rights initiatives. He called for individuals to dedicate themselves to the mission of the NAACP by influencing policies that promote equality, engaging in voter registration, and supporting education initiatives for youth. Sutton’s reflections highlighted the importance of grassroots involvement in creating a more just society.
Looking ahead, the Sampson County NAACP invites community members to contribute to the ongoing dialogue around civil and human rights. The fight for equality requires collective action, and the organization seeks to inspire individuals to take an active role in shaping the future. Through advocacy, engagement, and education, the NAACP aims to make a lasting impact on the quality of life in Sampson County and beyond.
The Freedom Fund Banquet not only celebrates past achievements but also paves the way for future advancements in civil rights. The continued support from the community remains essential as the organization works towards a more equitable society for all.
