A time capsule buried by Princess Diana in 1991 has been opened at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) ahead of the anniversary of her death on August 31, 2024. The capsule was unearthed as part of preparations for the hospital’s new Children’s Cancer Centre. During a ceremony to lay the foundation stone for the Variety Club Building, Diana sealed the capsule, which has now provided a nostalgic glimpse into the early 1990s.

The contents of the capsule, revealed in a photo shared by GOSH, showcase a range of items from a bygone era. Among the notable artifacts is a CD of Kylie Minogue’s third album, “Rhythm of Love.” Additional items include a pocket television, a collection of British coins, and a solar-powered calculator. Other intriguing pieces such as tree seeds in a bottle, a sheet of recycled paper, a snowflake hologram, and a European passport were also included.

GOSH noted that two young individuals contributed the capsule’s contents after winning a national competition that asked them to select eight items symbolizing life in the 1990s. The emotional significance of opening the time capsule was underscored by the participation of hospital staff who were either born in 1991 or had been working there at the time the capsule was sealed.

Jason Dawson, Senior Responsible Owner for the Children’s Cancer Centre, remarked on the experience, stating that it was “really quite moving.” He emphasized that the unearthing of the capsule allowed the staff to connect with “memories of things that have been planted by a generation gone by.” The discovery serves not only as a reflection of history but also as an inspiration for those involved in the hospital’s ongoing mission.

The time capsule’s opening marks a poignant moment as it aligns with the upcoming anniversary of Princess Diana’s passing, inviting reflection on her lasting legacy and the impact she had on various charitable causes, particularly in health and children’s services.
