A remarkable feline named Ollie has been named Newsweek’s Pet of the Week, captivating animal lovers with his heartwarming story. Rescued from a dumpster as a feral cat, Ollie, who has only one eye, has thrived under the care of his owner, Micki Smith, for nearly 15 years. Smith, a 72-year-old resident of Stoneybrook Country Club in Sarasota, found Ollie on Petfinder when he was just three months old.

The circumstances of Ollie’s early life were challenging. He was discovered with a severe eye infection, which ultimately led to the decision to remove the damaged eye rather than pursue costly treatments. “He used to be more expensive to treat the eye with meds over a period of time than to remove it,” Smith explained. Despite this setback, Ollie has adapted well and enjoys a peaceful life, reportedly sleeping around 22 hours a day.

Finalists Showcase Diverse Tales of Rescue and Love

Ollie’s story is just one among several touching narratives featured this week. Another finalist, Stretch, found his forever home after a chance encounter during a Fourth of July fireworks display. He approached his now-owner, Stephanie Hill, despite being frightened. After efforts to locate his original family failed, Stretch became a cherished member of Hill’s household, albeit with some initial tension from her other cat, Midnight. Today, Stretch lives happily with Hill’s mother in Santa Fe, New Mexico, eagerly awaiting his owner’s visits.

Meanwhile, Thelma Oatman introduced her spirited dog, Boo Boo, to her home as a playful addition to her family. The mix of Chihuahua and Dachshund was initially a challenge for Oatman’s older dog, Suzy, who struggled with jealousy. However, after eight months, the two dogs have developed a playful relationship, with Oatman delighting in spoiling Boo Boo with treats and special outfits.

In another heartwarming tale, Laura Newell of Madison, Wisconsin, adopted a new cat named Lokii following the loss of her previous pet, Tyler, in 2017. Newell’s other cat, Bo, quickly formed a bond with Lokii, leading to playful sibling rivalry and shared moments of affection. “Sometimes there’s a battle of who gets mommy’s lap,” Newell said, highlighting the joy and antics that come with having multiple pets.
