Navy Doctor Dismissed After Controversial Social Media Scrutiny

Commander Janelle Marra, a Navy physician with over 21 years of service, has been removed from her position following a backlash initiated by right-wing activists on social media. Marra, known for her role as the “Navy deputy medical director for transgender healthcare,” was targeted after her LinkedIn profile was shared widely, leading to calls for her dismissal.
The situation escalated when the controversial X account Libs of TikTok tweeted a screenshot of Marra’s profile, which includes her pronouns and her current role. The account tagged Pete Hegseth, the Defense Secretary, urging him to investigate her position. Hegseth responded that same evening by retweeting with the comment, “Pronouns UPDATED: She/Her/Fired,” confirming his involvement in the decision to remove Marra from her command.
According to an insider with direct knowledge of the case who spoke to the local newspaper KPBS, Hegseth personally ordered Marra’s dismissal. The official reason provided for her removal was cited as a “loss of trust and confidence in her ability to command.” Marra has spent a significant portion of her career in the San Diego area, primarily at the San Diego Naval Medical Center and Camp Pendleton.
The insider also noted that Marra’s social media activity is under investigation, indicating that this scrutiny could lead to further consequences.
Reactions and Background
Space Force Col. Bree Fram, who knows Marra, expressed her dismay at the situation. She described Marra as an “exceptionally qualified doctor” who has made significant contributions to the health of numerous sailors and Marines throughout her nearly two-decade career. Fram herself has faced intense backlash, including threats aimed at her personal safety and that of her family.
“I received all sorts of threats – phone calls, voicemails – with messages that I should kill myself,” Fram disclosed in a recent interview with KPBS. “It’s been incredibly unpleasant.”
Marra’s profile in the LGBTQ+ Healthcare Directory identifies her as bisexual and highlights her specialization in treating transgender and nonbinary individuals. Despite her qualifications, a spokesperson for the Defense Health Agency clarified to KPBS that the title of Navy deputy medical director for transgender healthcare does not exist. While the Pentagon under the Biden Administration considered creating a Transgender Health Center, this initiative was never implemented.
“It was considered last year, and the services were asked to nominate personnel, but it was never established,” the spokesperson noted.
The dismissal of Commander Marra raises questions about the ongoing discourse around transgender healthcare in the military and the impact of social media on professional reputations. As discussions continue, the implications for personnel involved in LGBTQ+ healthcare within the military remain a critical issue.
