A powerful friendship between Don Johnson and Don McBurnett has endured for over two decades, marked by shared experiences and mutual support. The pair, both prominent figures in Duncanville, Texas, have demonstrated how camaraderie can flourish even amidst life’s challenges.

Two Lives, One Journey

Johnson, now 87 years old, reflects on the strong bond they have forged. “Anytime there’s a need, there’s Don, Don da-da-da-Don,” he sang playfully, highlighting the unwavering support they offer each other. McBurnett, a member of the Duncanville City Council, recalls their initial meeting, stating, “I knew Don Johnson before he knew me.” The duo has made significant contributions to their community, with Johnson earning recognition as the only Black Hall of Famer in his district’s Lions Club.

Both men have made their marks in a time when their presence together might not have been accepted. Johnson has dedicated much of his life to serving Dallas County, working on initiatives that address crucial community needs, from transportation to housing. He acknowledged the historical context of their friendship, saying, “When I hear his stories, it’s history.” This shared history has shaped their resilience and commitment to one another.

Overcoming Struggles Together

Life has not always been easy for Johnson. He has been candid about his battle with alcohol addiction, having entered recovery in 1958. That same year, he faced the heart-wrenching tragedy of losing his two-year-old son in a car accident. “Back then, we had to wait for a colored ambulance to come, and by the time they got there, he was dead,” Johnson recounted, emphasizing the racial disparities that existed.

McBurnett noted the significance of these experiences, stating, “It grabs your attention, and it lets you know that, hey, those differences existed.” Today, the challenges that defined their early lives have transformed into a shared mission to uplift each other and their community.

Johnson, who is now blind, finds solace in McBurnett’s companionship. “This guy’s eyesight might be a little bit off; but he still has vision,” McBurnett remarked, highlighting Johnson’s ability to see beyond his physical limitations. “I’m able to see a whole lot better mentally than I was able to see visually,” Johnson added, illustrating the strength he derives from their friendship.

Every Friday night, McBurnett and Johnson uphold a cherished tradition: karaoke. Johnson, who is currently in a hospice program, remains optimistic about his life. “I don’t count my problems. I count my blessings,” he said, reiterating the importance of their bond. For McBurnett, true success lies in having a genuine friend. “If you could hold up your hand and say I have one true friend, you’re a very successful person,” he expressed. “With Don Johnson, I have a true friend.”

Johnson echoed these sentiments, saying, “I feel like I got a brother from another mother.” Together, they exemplify the profound impact of friendship, showcasing that support and loyalty can transcend even the toughest of trials.
