Council Bluffs DAR Honors Local Heroes with Community Service Awards

The Council Bluffs Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recognized local community leaders on September 20, 2025, during a meeting at A Bit of Iowa in Walnut, Iowa. Community Service Awards were presented to Rhonda Hope from Avoca and Cindy Pittz from Missouri Valley for their outstanding contributions to their respective communities.
Celebrating Acts of Service
Rhonda Hope, a dedicated State Farm agent, earned her award after completing an impressive 100 acts of good in her community. Her efforts secured her a $5,000 grant from State Farm, which she generously donated to the local Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of Avoca. This recognition placed her among the Top 100 agents in the nation, showcasing her commitment to community service.
Cindy Pittz, a member of the DAR, was honored for her initiative in organizing an engaging Earth Day celebration at the Sawmill Hollow Organic Farm. The event provided educational opportunities for school children, featuring activities such as hiking, kite making and flying, and a frog jumping contest. Attendees also explored Loess Hills soil conservation and learned about raptor recovery. Refreshments included lemonade made from locally sourced aronia berries.
A Gathering of Community Spirit
The awards were presented by Karen Hansen, chair of the Community Service Awards committee. Hansen not only organized the event but also shared insights on five nurses from Walnut who served in the Unit K mobile hospital during World War I and received the French Cross for their bravery. This historical account added depth to the gathering, celebrating the spirit of service that has characterized the community.
The meeting was hosted at A Bit of Iowa, where attendees enjoyed a delicious spread prepared by Karol Calabro and Lydia Johnson. The menu featured quiche, French toast, fresh fruit, desserts, and beverages, contributing to a warm and inviting atmosphere for the celebration.
Through events like these, the Council Bluffs Chapter of the DAR continues to honor those who make significant contributions to their communities, fostering a sense of unity and inspiration among members and local residents alike.
