Aitana Bonmatí Makes History with Third Ballon D’Or Win

FC Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmatí achieved a historic milestone by winning her third consecutive Ballon D’Or during the award ceremony held at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris on September 22, 2025. This victory marks her as the first woman to secure this prestigious accolade three times, reinforcing her status as one of the leading figures in women’s football.
The Ballon D’Or, presented by France Football, recognizes the player deemed to have excelled in the previous season. Initially established for men in 1956, a women’s category was introduced in 2018. In its relatively brief history, only four women have received the award: Ada Hegerberg, Megan Rapinoe, Alexia Putellas, and Bonmatí herself.
Bonmatí triumphed over fellow nominees, including her teammate Mariona Caldentey and England’s Alessia Russo, both of whom contributed significantly to their teams, with Russo playing a crucial role in the Lionesses’ UEFA Women’s Euro victory this summer. Reflecting on her achievement, Bonmatí expressed gratitude and pride, stating, “It’s a source of pride, it was very competitive. I can only thank everyone. Many people have allowed me to take this path.”
Impact on Women’s Football
This latest win highlights an exceptional period for Spanish football, as it marks the fifth consecutive year that a Spanish international from FC Barcelona has claimed the women’s Ballon D’Or. Prior to Bonmatí’s first win, Alexia Putellas was the recipient. The recognition of Bonmatí not only elevates her profile but also enhances the visibility of women’s football, particularly in Spain and Catalonia.
Bonmatí acknowledged the contributions of her teammates, remarking, “It could have easily been any of my team-mates. If I could share it, I would because it’s been a great year.” Her sentiments reflect a growing camaraderie within the team, which has played a pivotal role in their collective success.
The midfielder also emphasized the lessons learned from recent challenges. “Football isn’t just about winning or losing, as we see today. I lost two titles with my teams, but I learned a lot,” she noted. She expressed her hope for future success, particularly looking ahead to the upcoming World Cup in Brazil.
Recognition and Future Aspirations
Bonmatí received her award from former FC Barcelona legend Andrés Iniesta, a player she admired during her youth. In a moment of reflection, she stated, “My football today is thanks to them, for everything they taught me. I never imagined when I was a little girl that I could achieve something like this.”
At 27 years old, Bonmatí’s achievement places her among an elite group in football history. Only two other players have won three consecutive Ballon D’Or titles: Michel Platini in the 1980s and Lionel Messi, who won four in succession from 2009 to 2012. This level of consistency underscores her exceptional talent and dedication to the sport.
In a noteworthy achievement alongside Bonmatí, her FC Barcelona colleague Vicky López was awarded the inaugural women’s Kopa Trophy, recognizing the best female footballer under 21. López dedicated her award to her mother, highlighting the personal motivation behind her success. “I want to thank the RFEF and all its staff. From the U-17 national team to the senior team,” she said.
As Bonmatí continues to lead both her club and national team, her historic third Ballon D’Or win not only celebrates her individual talent but also signals a significant moment for women’s sports, inspiring future generations of female athletes worldwide.
