Nationwide Recall of Frozen Sprouted Beans Due to Salmonella Risk

Federal health officials are investigating a nationwide outbreak of Salmonella linked to frozen sprouted beans sold under the Deep brand. The outbreak has resulted in 11 confirmed cases across 10 states, with four individuals hospitalized. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported.
On July 16, 2023, the Chetak LLC Group issued a voluntary recall of their frozen sprouted moong (mung) beans and sprouted moth (mat) beans, both packaged in 16-ounce bags. The recalled products bear various lot codes, including IN 24330, 25072, 25108, and others listed on the packaging. Health officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are advising consumers and businesses to refrain from consuming, selling, or serving the affected products.
Consumers are encouraged to dispose of any recalled beans or return them to the point of purchase. Additionally, surfaces and utensils that may have been in contact with the affected products should be cleaned thoroughly with hot, soapy water or through a dishwasher to mitigate the risk of cross-contamination.
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection typically manifest as diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps within six hours to six days after exposure. While most individuals recover without medical intervention within a week, the illness can be particularly severe for vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.
As the CDC and FDA continue to monitor this outbreak, they are collaborating with state health departments to identify further cases and trace the source of contamination. Businesses are reminded to adhere to FDA-sanctioned sanitation protocols and to halt distribution of the implicated items.
Consumers experiencing severe symptoms are advised to seek immediate medical attention. For localized inquiries, residents should contact their state or local health departments for guidance. Authorities are working diligently to ensure public safety and provide timely updates on the situation as it develops.
