Mother Bernard House Transforms Lives in Eureka Community

Mother Bernard House (MBH) in Eureka, California, has quickly established itself as a vital resource for individuals experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity since its opening in December 2023. The program emphasizes the importance of stable housing as a foundation for overall health and well-being, aiming to provide a safe haven for those in need.
A Holistic Approach to Housing and Health
Operated by Providence Supportive Housing and supported by the CARE Network Program at Providence St. Joseph Hospital, MBH focuses on fostering independent living skills. It connects residents with essential health care, treatment, and employment services through a multidisciplinary, community-based approach.
In its first year, MBH successfully housed 53 tenants, offering both permanent supportive housing and recuperative care units. One of the first residents, Catherine Douglas, had faced homelessness for five years before finding a stable living situation at MBH. “This place has been a blessing to me,” she shared. “I’m 68 and you don’t know what it’s like living outside at my age. Now I have a stable living environment. I’ve been able to work and stay sober because I have a home.”
A distinctive feature of MBH is its comprehensive support system. Residents benefit from a dedicated team of caregivers, including a nurse, social worker, and community health worker. This collaboration aims to help individuals maintain their housing while improving their personal health and well-being.
Positive Outcomes and Community Impact
Joy Victorine, manager of the CARE Network Program at St. Joseph Hospital, reflected on the program’s impact since its inception. “MBH supported a transformative shift for 70 individuals who found stability, safety, and support within the program,” Victorine said. “We’ve seen fewer emergency room visits, family reunifications, employment opportunities, and more.”
As MBH enters its second year, it continues to serve as a model of holistic care and community partnership. It is one of 18 supportive housing programs owned and operated by Providence Supportive Housing across Washington, Oregon, and California.
The commitment of the Providence St. Joseph care team underscores the mission-driven work at MBH. Their compassion and dedication contribute to lasting change in the lives of vulnerable populations in the Eureka community.
