The Kaweah Health Board of Directors has appointed Marc Mertz as the organization’s new CEO. Mertz, who has served as the chief strategy officer since 2018, will officially take on the role on December 22, 2023. He succeeds Gary Herbst, the longtime CEO who announced his retirement in June.

Mertz has extensive experience in healthcare strategy, having worked for over 20 years in various leadership roles. Before joining Kaweah Health, he was the vice president and physician services practice leader at GE Healthcare, previously known as The Camden Group, in El Segundo, California. His earlier positions include president of Health Check Incorporated in Florida and vice president at The Horizon Group in Virginia.

In making the announcement, Mike Olmos, President of the Kaweah Health Board, expressed confidence in Mertz’s ability to lead the organization. “We are excited for Marc to step into the position of CEO, bringing not only more than 20 years of experience outside our organization, but also a deep knowledge and understanding of Kaweah Health and our unique challenges,” Olmos stated. “Marc is the right person to guide Kaweah Health through the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”

The board’s decision followed a comprehensive nationwide search that attracted numerous candidates. Mertz and other applicants underwent a rigorous evaluation process that included meetings with board members, medical staff, and community stakeholders.

Beyond his executive responsibilities at Kaweah Health, Mertz is actively involved in the local community. He holds leadership positions with the Rotary Club of Visalia and various nonprofit organizations, underscoring his commitment to community service.

As Kaweah Health prepares for this leadership transition, the organization aims to continue addressing the evolving healthcare needs of the Visalia community and beyond. The board looks forward to Mertz’s strategic guidance and vision as they navigate the complex landscape of healthcare services in the coming years.
