Google Pixel Watch 4 Launches: Is It Worth Upgrading from 3?

The launch of the Google Pixel Watch 4 has sparked discussions about whether consumers should consider the Pixel Watch 3, especially as discounts on the older model become more prevalent. The new smartwatch offers several enhancements that may appeal to potential buyers, but the previous model remains a strong contender, particularly for budget-conscious consumers.
In this article, we will explore the key differences between these two smartwatches across various categories, including price, design, durability, display, health and fitness features, safety features, AI capabilities, and battery life.
Price Comparison
Both the Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Watch 3 share a starting price of $349 for the 41mm model without LTE, with the 45mm version priced at $399. The LTE variant of the Pixel Watch 4 is available for $499. As of now, the Pixel Watch 3 can be found for less than retail; for instance, Walmart lists the 41mm version for $249, a significant reduction from its original price. With the holiday season approaching, further discounts on the Pixel Watch 3 are anticipated.
Design and Durability
In terms of design, the Pixel Watch 4 maintains similar dimensions and weight to its predecessor, featuring the same button layout. A notable change is the charging mechanism, as the newer model charges on its side, allowing it to function as a bedside clock. While the Pixel Watch 4 has a slightly larger, domed screen, the overall aesthetic remains consistent.
Both models boast an aluminum case and are rated for water resistance up to 50 meters, along with an IP68 rating for dust and moisture protection. The Pixel Watch 3 has proven durable, and expectations are high for the Pixel Watch 4 to perform similarly.
Display Enhancements
The Pixel Watch 4 features a new domed glass touchscreen and offers 50% more brightness than the Pixel Watch 3, reaching a maximum of 3,000 nits. This improvement makes it easier to read in direct sunlight, a significant advantage for outdoor enthusiasts. Although the display upgrades are noteworthy, they may not be a decisive factor for all users.
Health and Fitness Features
Health tracking capabilities remain a strong selling point for both models. The Pixel Watch 4 introduces an upgraded body temperature sensor, reportedly enhancing sleep stage tracking by 18%. It also includes a dual-band GPS antenna, which may provide more accurate tracking in challenging environments. In contrast, the Pixel Watch 3 continues to deliver reliable tracking and supports a broad range of activities, including advanced sleep insights and workout recovery tools.
While both devices offer similar health features, the Pixel Watch 4 has introduced an AI-driven capability that automatically detects workout types, a feature not available on the Pixel Watch 3.
Safety Features
Both smartwatches come equipped with essential safety features, such as fall detection and car crash alerts. The Pixel Watch 4, however, adds a new satellite SOS messaging capability, which allows users to connect with emergency services even when cell reception is unavailable. This feature is currently limited to the LTE version of the Pixel Watch 4 and could be invaluable for those who frequently venture into remote areas.
AI and Battery Life
The Pixel Watch 4 runs on Google’s latest Wear OS and features the Gemini AI voice assistant, which enhances the user experience with contextual responses. A unique gesture control feature, ‘Raise to Talk’, allows users to activate the assistant without pressing buttons or using voice commands.
In terms of battery life, the Pixel Watch 4 shows promise with improved efficiency. It is rated for 30 hours for the 41mm model and 40 hours for the 45mm model, compared to the Pixel Watch 3’s 24 hours. Real-world performance may vary, but the Pixel Watch 4’s upgraded battery and faster charging capabilities—50% in just 15 minutes—suggest a potential advantage.
Overall, while the Pixel Watch 4 offers several compelling features, the Pixel Watch 3 remains a viable option for those seeking a quality smartwatch at a lower price. As consumers weigh their options, it will be essential to consider personal needs and whether the enhancements of the Pixel Watch 4 justify the investment.
Stay tuned for more detailed analyses and comparisons as the Pixel Watch 4 becomes available for testing in the coming weeks.
