Guam Memorial Hospital (GMH) has embarked on a significant partnership with Keck Medicine of the University of Southern California, aiming to elevate patient care and enhance training for medical and administrative staff. This collaboration comes as GMH prepares to transition to a new facility in Mangilao. During a press conference on March 11, 2024, Governor Lou Leon Guerrero and interim GMH Chief Executive Officer Dr. Joleen Aguon detailed the agreement, highlighting its potential to improve healthcare delivery on the island.

The partnership with Keck Medicine, which includes several hospitals, clinics, and the Keck School of Medicine, is expected to bring advanced medical services to Guam. Governor Leon Guerrero emphasized the institution’s stellar reputation. “They are advanced in procedures, operations, robotics. They’re right in there in the top ranking of quality health care, advanced technology, and most of all, a great attention to customer service and patients,” she stated.

The initiative follows years of discussions with Dr. Juan Quiros, a California-based cardiologist affiliated with USC, who has been visiting Guam for over two decades to provide care. According to the governor, the agreement will allow Keck Medicine to send specialty clinicians to the island and offer telemedicine services, which could significantly enhance patient access to medical expertise.

BJ Palomo, a local resident, shared his personal experience during the press conference. He recently underwent open heart surgery at Keck Hospital in California after discovering a serious heart condition during a routine check-up. “Within a week, I had my open heart surgery,” he said, expressing gratitude for the care he received.

Dr. Aguon noted that this is Guam’s first formal partnership with a major medical center in the United States. She identified a key goal of the collaboration as facilitating smoother processes for patients seeking treatment at Keck Medicine facilities. “Patients on this island have gone out for surgery and sent back,” she explained, alluding to the challenges faced by those with complex medical needs.

To address these issues, GMH plans to establish a pre-consultation process with Keck Medicine. This would allow patients to meet with physicians via telemedicine before traveling for treatment, helping to alleviate anxiety and clarify treatment expectations. GMH Associate Administrator of Medical Services Dr. Ricardo Eusebio described this initiative as a “gold mine” for patients.

Looking ahead, Dr. Aguon expressed interest in developing an oncology program at GMH in collaboration with Keck Medicine. This would include potential cost-sharing programs and the availability of certain cancer medications locally, ultimately reducing the financial burden on patients requiring specialized care. “Our vision is to remove these geographic barriers to care. We want to keep families united during their treatment,” she said.

The partnership also encompasses training and administrative collaboration, with Keck Medicine providing valuable resources and expertise. Dr. Aguon indicated that while establishing new processes could happen relatively quickly, navigating insurance approvals may present challenges.

Dr. Quiros, who participated in the press conference, highlighted the mutual benefits of the partnership. He recalled that when he first came to Guam 30 years ago, most patients requiring major procedures had to travel off-island. While progress has been made, he acknowledged that certain specialized procedures still necessitate treatment at advanced institutions.

Governor Leon Guerrero concluded the press conference by addressing concerns regarding the establishment of a new hospital facility. She reiterated the importance of improving management and operations within GMH, mentioning plans to enhance billing, collections, and electronic health records systems. “This is it,” she affirmed, emphasizing the commitment to transforming healthcare in Guam.

With this new partnership, GMH is poised to make substantial strides in patient care and medical training, positioning itself as a leader in healthcare services within the region.
