Darius Garland Injured: Cavs Guard Out for 7-10 Days with Toe Sprain
The Cleveland Cavaliers announced that guard Darius Garland will be sidelined for approximately seven to ten days due to a sprained right great toe. This injury occurred following the team’s successful two-game road trip in Philadelphia, where they achieved back-to-back victories against the Philadelphia 76ers. The injury is on Garland’s opposite foot from the one he underwent surgery on at the end of the previous season.
Head coach Kenny Atkinson provided clarity on the situation during a press conference after practice on Sunday. He stated that the team would have further updates on Garland’s condition following his absence from practice that day. “We’re going to have an update on DG this afternoon, so I’ll let that one ride,” Atkinson said.
After evaluating Garland, the diagnosis confirmed a Grade 1 right great toe sprain. Garland will participate in ongoing treatment and rehabilitation throughout the week, with the Cavaliers planning to reassess his condition in about a week.
In addition to Garland’s injury, the Cavaliers are also dealing with the absence of guard Sam Merrill, who is recovering from both a hand and an ankle injury. Atkinson expressed optimism regarding Merrill’s status, stating, “I talked to Sam. He did not practice today. We’ll see. I don’t think it’s long-term because he’s recovering right now.”
On a more positive note, Dean Wade was able to take part in practice as he continues to work through his own knee injury. Atkinson indicated that Wade is considered a game-time decision for the upcoming matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder on March 6, 2024.
Another encouraging development for the Cavaliers is that swingman Max Strus, who has been recovering from foot surgery this offseason, was seen increasing his activity levels during practice. Strus is eager to make his season debut, and his return could bolster the Cavaliers’ depth as they navigate the challenges of the current season.
As the Cavaliers prepare for their next game, the team remains focused on adjusting to these injury challenges while trying to maintain their momentum in the league.
