Adam Collard Reveals Secrets to His Remarkable Body Transformation

Adam Collard, known for his appearance on the reality show *Love Island*, underwent a significant transformation between the ages of 16 and 19, reducing his body fat from approximately 44% to just 8%. A combination of weightlifting and nutritional education proved pivotal in this journey, allowing him to build muscle and enhance his overall fitness.
Collard, who stands at six feet five inches, described his early years as challenging. He struggled with being overweight, which affected his self-esteem and social interactions. “I was always one of the biggest kids, both in height and in weight,” he told Business Insider. This led to feelings of insecurity and a cycle of unhealthy eating habits, which only exacerbated his weight issues.
A turning point occurred when Collard turned 16. Encouraged by a friend with similar fitness goals, he began attending a local gym. “I just fell in love with the process,” he said, highlighting the gym as a place where hard work leads to tangible results. Over the next three years, while maintaining a weight of around 200 pounds, he dramatically altered his body composition.
Key Strategies for Muscle Building
Collard attributes his success to three main strategies that he believes are essential for anyone looking to build muscle effectively.
The first is the practice of **progressive overload**, which involves gradually increasing the weights used in workouts. He noted that this method is crucial for muscle growth. A study published in the International Journal of Sports Medicine in 2024 supports this, demonstrating that novice gym-goers significantly improved muscle mass and strength through progressive overload techniques.
“Tracking and monitoring progress is big,” Collard emphasized. He recommended using tools like spreadsheets or mobile apps to keep a record of lifting weights, as accountability is vital in any fitness journey.
The second strategy focuses on the quality of workouts. Collard explained that the intensity and proper technique of exercises are more significant than merely the number of sessions completed each week. “It’s the people who train with true intensity that see progress,” he said, suggesting that effective workouts do not necessarily mean pushing oneself to the limit but rather training smartly and efficiently.
Finally, Collard stresses the importance of understanding macronutrients. Early in his fitness journey, he experimented with various fad diets, including severe carbohydrate restriction, which he found counterproductive. He learned that for muscle growth, it is essential to maintain a calorie surplus while ensuring adequate protein intake.
“It’s not just calories that count,” he stated. “Macronutrients are what will decide how you gain weight—are you gaining mostly muscle or fat?” He pointed out that the three primary macronutrients—carbohydrates, protein, and fats—must be consumed in the right proportions.
According to a meta-analysis from 2022, consuming 0.7 grams of protein per pound of body weight daily, alongside regular resistance training, is optimal for strength gains. Collard believes that a proper understanding of nutrition can significantly impact one’s body composition and fitness level.
From Reality Star to Fitness Professional
Today, Adam Collard is not only recognized for his time on *Love Island* but also for his role as a personal trainer and gym owner in Newcastle, UK. He participates in various fitness endurance competitions, such as Ironman and Hyrox, advocating for the importance of fitness in daily life. “I think people undervalue how nice it is to just be fit for life,” he remarked.
