UW Board of Regents Introduces Security Measures for Meetings

Attendees of the UW Board of Regents’ meeting this week at the Gordon Dining and Event Center in Madison are now required to undergo security screenings. This new policy mandates that all participants walk through metal detectors prior to entering the venue. Those who refuse the screening or carry prohibited items will be denied entry.

The implementation of these security measures follows incidents in July 2023, when at least four residences belonging to members of the UW Board of Regents were vandalized with pro-Palestinian slogans. According to a statement from Mark Pitsch, a spokesperson for the Universities of Wisconsin, the safety and security of the meeting is of utmost importance.

Enhanced Security Protocols

The meetings are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, and the new protocols aim to address safety concerns that have arisen due to past incidents. Previous Regents meetings have experienced disruptions, including protests. In December 2022, police cited 19 demonstrators for obstructing a Regents meeting at UW-Madison’s campus.

The new regulations extend to personal belongings, as attendees’ backpacks, purses, handbags, totes, briefcases, camera bags, and laptop cases will be subject to searches upon entry. Items prohibited at the Board of Regents meetings include weapons, alcohol, illegal substances, large banners, noise-making devices, and any items deemed disruptive by venue staff or UW Police.

Pitsch did not clarify whether security screenings will be a permanent feature at future Regents meetings. The added measures reflect a growing awareness of safety concerns in educational environments, prompting institutions to take proactive steps to ensure the protection of all participants.

The ongoing discussions at the UW Board of Regents will cover important issues impacting the university system, making the need for a secure environment even more critical. As these meetings progress, the attention to security is likely to shape how such events are conducted in the future, reinforcing the commitment to a safe and orderly discourse.
