Six Herkimer BOCES Seniors Launch Pre-Apprenticeship Program
Six seniors from the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Career and Technical Education programs have embarked on a new pre-apprenticeship initiative aimed at enhancing local workforce development. This program, a collaboration between the Herkimer BOCES work-based learning department, local businesses, and the HMO Workforce Development Board, provides students with valuable hands-on training while they continue their education.
The pre-apprenticeship program requires each participant to complete a minimum of 60 hours of focused on-the-job training, coupled with related classroom instruction. This after-school initiative not only aims to build a local talent pipeline but also aligns students’ skill development with the needs of area businesses. By doing so, it strengthens the educational pathways of the students involved.
In recognition of their commitment, students participating in the program will receive both monetary compensation and a new laptop computer. The following students are taking part in the pre-apprenticeship program, along with their respective BOCES programs, home school districts, and local businesses:
– Richard Savarese, Advanced Manufacturing, Central Valley, at Fuller Tools.
– Riyen Wentworth, Advanced Manufacturing, Central Valley, at Turbo Machined Products.
– Jayden Davis, Visual Communications and Media Arts, Frankfort-Schuyler, at Max’s Print Shop.
– Alex Shand, Welding and Metal Fabrication, Dolgeville, at Feldmeier Equipment.
– James Amendolare, Welding and Metal Fabrication, Central Valley, at Feldmeier Equipment.
– Elijah Jones, Power Sports and Agricultural Mechanics, Poland, at Darrow’s Adirondack Motors.
This initiative reflects the increasing recognition of the importance of connecting educational programs with local industry needs. By participating in the pre-apprenticeship program, students are not only gaining practical experience but also positioning themselves for future employment in their chosen fields. With the support of local businesses and educational institutions, this program aims to create a more skilled workforce that meets the evolving demands of the job market.
