Pacific Beach Middle School Enhances CPR Training with New Equipment
PACIFIC BEACH – Pacific Beach Middle School has strengthened its healthcare literacy curriculum by incorporating new CPR training equipment valued at $1,500. The school received two complete CPR in Schools Kits intended for hands-on training, enabling students to learn vital lifesaving skills.
Funding Boost from American Heart Association
During a recent demonstration of the new resources, instructor Paul Chen explained the significance of the grant. “This funding provides PBMS with two complete training kits, including mannequins and an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Trainer,” he stated. The equipment was secured after Chen presented a proposal to the local board of the American Heart Association last summer.
As a result of the successful application, the school received not only the training kits but also 20 inflatable mannequins equipped with audible feedback, 20 AED trainer mock-ups, six sets of digital course materials, inflation pumps, and necessary storage and cleaning supplies.
Comprehensive Training Program
CPR training is integrated into a semester-long career exploration program taught by three instructors over a period of eighteen weeks. Chen leads the healthcare literacy segment, where students rotate through two classes every three weeks. In total, approximately 200 students participate in CPR training annually.
Throughout the two-week CPR module, students are introduced to essential concepts, including basic heart anatomy and the pathways of blood circulation and electrical conduction. The course culminates in practical sessions where students learn the techniques for performing CPR and using an AED.
Key components of the training include assessing the scene and patient, determining the need for CPR, and executing the correct techniques for chest compressions. Students practice delivering effective compressions for a continuous minute and demonstrating the proper use of the AED.
Upon successful completion of the module, students receive a certificate of participation and a face shield, equipping them with both knowledge and recognition of their efforts in learning these critical skills.
This initiative at Pacific Beach Middle School not only enhances the educational experience but also prepares students for potential real-life emergencies, fostering a sense of readiness and responsibility in the community.
