O’Neill—Northeast Community College’s extended campus recently hosted its fourth annual Early College Exploration Day, attracting nearly 270 students from 10 area high schools. This engaging event aimed to help prospective college students explore various career options and connect with real-world opportunities.

Throughout the day, participants rotated through six out of 13 interactive breakout sessions, where they engaged in hands-on activities across diverse fields such as health care, science, engineering, public administration, applied technology, and truck driving. Many of these programs are accessible to high school students through the Fridays @ Northeast initiative.

Faculty members and industry professionals led dynamic demonstrations that provided valuable insights into various career paths. Students were able to experience the practical applications of their interests, from the intricacies of biology and engineering to essential skills in welding and electrical systems.

“This event is all about helping students envision their future,” said Merri Schneider, director of the extended campus in O’Neill. “They’re not just hearing about careers—they’re experiencing them and connecting with instructors who teach our Fridays @ Northeast classes. That connection can make all the difference in planning for their future.”

The Early College Exploration Day underscores Northeast Community College’s commitment to offering early access to higher education and career pathways for young people in the region. The hands-on approach helps demystify various professions and encourages students to consider their future beyond high school.

As students engaged with educators and industry experts, they gained a clearer understanding of the academic requirements and workforce needs associated with their fields of interest. This initiative not only prepares students for potential career choices but also strengthens the connection between local education and the job market.

In a world where career decisions can seem overwhelming, events like these provide essential support for students navigating their future. The positive response from both students and educators highlights the importance of such programs in fostering informed career choices.
