Three school districts in Minnesota, including Byron, Hayfield, and Kasson-Mantorville, were placed under lockdown on the morning of September 18, 2023. This decision came in response to an unspecified concern communicated by law enforcement, as stated by school officials.

The lockdown at Byron High School began around 09:20 and was initiated at the request of the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office. An email sent to families by Superintendent Nate Walbruch clarified that the measure was taken due to “concerning behavior from a community member.” He emphasized that there was no direct threat to the school, describing the action as a precautionary step to ensure the safety of all students and staff.

Around 09:42, Kasson-Mantorville Schools also received guidance from local police to implement a “secure lockdown.” Superintendent Beth Giese confirmed in a communication to parents that multiple law enforcement agencies were actively monitoring the area, employing drone technology and other resources to enhance safety measures.

Shortly thereafter, Hayfield Community Schools announced via Facebook that they had entered a secure lockdown around 10:00. Their message echoed the sentiments of Kasson-Mantorville, stating the lockdown was executed “out of an abundance of caution.”

Details surrounding the initial cause of the lockdowns remain limited. According to a press release from the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office, they were alerted by the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office around 09:00 regarding a “potential concerning incident in Olmsted County.” The sheriff’s office reiterated that there was no direct or active threat to school safety, clarifying that the situation is under active investigation.

The ongoing communication between law enforcement and school officials is vital as authorities work to assess and resolve the situation. The necessity for lockdown protocols underscores the importance placed on student and staff safety in educational environments.

As the investigation continues, updates will be provided as further information becomes available.
