Several local students have earned academic recognition and opportunities for international study, reflecting their commitment to education and global engagement. The University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) has named over 11,500 students to its dean’s list for the summer 2025 term, including five students from the local area. To qualify for this honor, students must complete a minimum of six credits during the term and achieve a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the term, while also maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5 at UMGC.

The local students recognized on the dean’s list include:

  • Erica Bates, of Castaic
  • David Keller, of Valencia
  • Chad Mitchell, of Valencia
  • Manuel Rascon, of Valencia
  • Paolo Jose Santos, of Agua Dulce

Founded over 75 years ago, UMGC has established itself as the largest provider of postsecondary education in Maryland, catering primarily to working adults and military service members. The institution offers more than 135 degrees and certificates, alongside a variety of online and hybrid courses, ensuring accessibility for students worldwide.

Local Student Selected for Global Citizenship Project in Kenya

In another notable achievement, Carter Sand, a student from Stevenson Ranch, was selected to participate in Shenandoah University’s 2026 Global Citizenship Project (GCP). The announcement was made during the university’s 35th International Convocation on November 19, 2023, when participants learned about their international destinations for spring break in March 2026.

Sand is among a group of 50 participants who will travel to various countries, including Slovakia, Hong Kong, Saint Lucia, Cuba, and Kenya. The participants, which include students, faculty, and staff, were selected in October but only recently discovered their specific destinations.

Shenandoah University’s Global Citizenship Project has a legacy of sending over 1,400 participants on university-funded trips to more than 70 countries and seven U.S. states and territories. This initiative aims to enhance participants’ understanding of global issues while fostering personal growth. Established in 1875, Shenandoah University is located in Winchester, Virginia, and serves over 4,400 students across more than 200 academic programs.

These accomplishments highlight the dedication of local students to their academic pursuits and their eagerness to engage with the world beyond their immediate environment. As these students embark on their journeys, they not only elevate their own educational experiences but also contribute to a broader understanding of global citizenship.
