Liverpool Starts Premier League Season with Tribute to Diogo Jota
The new Premier League season commenced at Anfield on August 11, 2023, marked by a heartfelt tribute to late Liverpool star Diogo Jota. Fans gathered in bright sunshine, some visibly emotional, to honor Jota, who tragically lost his life along with his brother, André Silva, in a car accident on July 3. As the match between Liverpool and Bournemouth began, supporters displayed banners, scarves, and balloons featuring Jota’s image and his iconic No. 20 kit number.
The emotional atmosphere intensified as the crowd united in singing Liverpool’s cherished anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Broadcast footage captured the poignant moment, with many fans visibly moved. The public address announcer called for a moment of silence in remembrance of “our forever 20” and his brother. Liverpool players formed a tight circle, arms draped over each other’s shoulders, while fans presented a mosaic display in the stands spelling out “DJ 20” and “AS 30” in the colors of the Portuguese flag. A black-and-white image of the brothers was shown on video screens, prompting players to bow their heads in respect.
As the match unfolded, Liverpool fans continued their tribute, particularly during the 20th minute, when supporters rose, clapped, and chanted in honor of Jota. Players and coaching staff from both teams wore black armbands as a sign of respect. The emotional homage was further highlighted by a similar tribute at the Community Shield match the previous weekend.
On the sporting front, the reigning Premier League champions displayed their intent to reclaim the title, despite significant changes to their roster. Liverpool has strengthened its squad with high-profile acquisitions, including Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, along with Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. New defender Milos Kerkez also made his debut, facing his former club.
Ekitike’s debut was memorable, as he scored a goal in the 37th minute, putting Liverpool ahead 1-0. Celebrating his goal, he formed the number “20” with his fingers, a touching nod to Jota. Under the management of Arne Slot, Liverpool aims for its first consecutive title in over 40 years, following their championship win last season.
The match, infused with both emotion and competitive spirit, signals Liverpool’s commitment to honoring Jota’s legacy while pursuing success in the Premier League. As the season progresses, fans eagerly anticipate how the squad will adapt and perform.
