Joplin Health Department Launches Life-Saving CPR Classes
The Joplin Health Department has initiated a series of CPR training classes aimed at empowering local residents with essential life-saving skills. The initiative comes in response to alarming statistics indicating that approximately half of Americans are unaware of how to perform CPR, despite its proven potential to save thousands of lives each year.
To address this gap in knowledge, the Health Department is offering three distinct CPR courses on a rotating monthly schedule. These classes cater to participants of all skill levels, ensuring that everyone from new parents to experienced caregivers can learn how to respond effectively in emergencies.
The first class, titled Friends and Family CPR, is designed specifically for individuals such as parents, grandparents, babysitters, and others who may find themselves in a position to assist children or loved ones. This course focuses on the fundamentals of CPR and how to provide care in a family context.
Another option is the AHA HeartCode BLS Skills Checkoff, which serves as a hands-on skills session necessary for completing the certification for the HeartCode Basic Life Support program. This practical experience is crucial for those looking to deepen their understanding and obtain formal accreditation in CPR procedures.
Additionally, the AHA Heartsaver CPR/AED course teaches participants how to administer CPR and effectively use an automated external defibrillator (AED). This course emphasizes safety and efficiency, ensuring that individuals are equipped to act swiftly during cardiac emergencies.
Classes are conducted in the Health Department’s WIC classroom, located at 321 East 4th Street in Joplin. The upcoming schedule includes:
– **March 11, 2024**:
– 09:30 – 12:00: Heartsaver CPR/AED
– 15:00 – 16:00: HeartCode BLS Skills Checkoff
– **April 22, 2024**:
– 09:00 – 12:30: Friends and Family CPR
– 15:00 – 16:00: HeartCode BLS Skills Checkoff
– **May 13, 2024**:

Participation in these classes requires prior registration and payment. Interested individuals can access the online catalog through the Joplin Health Department’s website at https://www.joplinmo.org/315/How-To-Register, specifically under the Adult Programs tab. For further inquiries, residents may contact the Health Department directly at 417-623-6122, ext. 1258.
By offering these vital training sessions, the Joplin Health Department aims to foster a community where more individuals are prepared to act decisively in emergencies, potentially saving lives in critical moments.
