A former student has publicly endorsed Benjamin Speed for a position on the Bangor School Committee, highlighting his exceptional dedication as an educator. Simon French, who studied under Speed at the Hancock County Technical Center, emphasized the significant impact Speed had on his career trajectory.

In a letter submitted to the Bangor Daily News, French described Speed as one of the most committed teachers he has encountered. “I had the privilege of being his student for three years,” French noted, attributing much of his current success as the director of creative for Maine Athletics and a house photographer for Waterfront Concerts to Speed’s mentorship. He expressed gratitude for the guidance he received, stating, “I truly wouldn’t be where I am in my career today without his guidance and belief in his students.”

Speed’s teaching style, as recounted by French, fosters an environment where creativity flourishes. Students, regardless of their skill levels, felt recognized and appreciated. “He took the time to understand each of us individually,” French added, illustrating Speed’s commitment to personalized education.

French believes that Speed would bring these same values to the Bangor School Committee, enhancing the educational landscape for the city’s youth. His endorsement reflects a broader sentiment that investing in students and empowering teachers is crucial for meaningful education. “I wholeheartedly support his candidacy,” French concluded, reflecting the respect and admiration held for Speed by his former students.

As the November 4 election approaches, the Bangor Daily News has announced it will cease accepting related letters and columns on October 29. While not all submissions can be published, French’s letter stands out for its heartfelt tribute to a dedicated educator who is eager to contribute to the community.

The endorsement of Benjamin Speed signifies a vote for a candidate who prioritizes student engagement and teacher support, ensuring the future of Bangor’s education remains bright.
