Chicago Star Angel Reese Celebrates Back-to-School with Students
More than 300,000 students from Chicago Public Schools returned to classes on August 21, 2023, and many began the new school year with a memorable celebration hosted by Angel Reese, a prominent player for the Chicago Sky. The event took place at International Sports Chicago, located on the city’s Northwest Side, where a vibrant back-to-school bash drew hundreds of young attendees.
The event featured live music, a variety of food options, and, of course, basketball activities that engaged the students. Approximately 2,000 students were presented with new Reebok backpacks filled with essential school supplies, setting a positive tone for the academic year ahead. Reese encouraged the attendees with motivational words, emphasizing that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.
In a parallel effort to support students, the Chicago Teachers Union hosted its third annual Back-to-School Summer Jam on the Near West Side. Dr. Diane Castro, the union’s elementary functional vice president, expressed enthusiasm about giving back to the community. “We are always really excited to give back to the community for our students and our families. We love having them out here,” she stated.
Families attending the Summer Jam enjoyed a feast of free food and entertainment while preparing their children for the new school year. The event included school supply giveaways and distribution of thousands of free books to foster a love of reading. Teacher Yexx Lajeune highlighted the importance of building spirit and confidence among students as they transition into the school year, saying, “We do this so they can have spirit, motivation, and confidence into the new school year.”
The Summer Jam also provided a complimentary visit to a salon where children could receive haircuts, ensuring they felt fresh and ready for the first day back in the classroom.
Initiatives like those led by Angel Reese and the Chicago Teachers Union play a significant role in supporting students as they embark on a new academic journey. Such community-driven events not only equip children with necessary supplies but also instill a sense of motivation and excitement for the challenges ahead.
