Arend T. Thibodeau’s ‘Maine’s Military Might’ Launches Nov. 28
Arend T. Thibodeau is set to release his fifth book, titled Maine’s Military Might: Memories of Military Infrastructure in the Pine Tree State, on November 28, 2023. This comprehensive volume delves into the historical significance of military installations in Maine, reflecting on the state’s strategic importance from its early days through the Cold War era.
Before Maine achieved statehood, military strategists recognized the region’s vulnerability, particularly after the War of 1812. This prompted Congress to approve the creation of several fortifications known as the “third system” of defensive structures in the United States. Thibodeau’s book explores how these early defenses laid the groundwork for later developments, especially during the Cold War that began after World War II.
Historical Significance and Strategic Developments
The Cold War ushered in a new chapter for Maine’s military landscape, as the state became a focal point for defense strategies in a nuclear age. The period saw the establishment of various military facilities, including radar bases, missile launch sites, and a Naval Air Station. Additionally, two Air Force heavy bomber bases were constructed, along with several communications stations. Thibodeau’s research highlights the rationale behind selecting these sites and their critical roles in national defense.
Some of these locations are now recognized as historical sites, reflecting their importance in safeguarding the nation. However, many others have fallen into neglect, with nature gradually reclaiming them. Thibodeau’s book invites readers to explore these contrasting fates, offering insights into Maine’s military history and its evolving landscape.
An Accomplished Author and Photographer
Arend T. Thibodeau has deep roots in Maine, where he resides with his wife. A professional photographer since 1996, his work has garnered accolades in galleries as far away as Athens, Greece. His photography spans various genres, including wildlife and portraiture, showcasing his versatile talent.
Thibodeau pursued his passion for writing at the University of Maine, where he earned dual degrees in art and English literature. While at university, he received recognition for his poetry, non-fiction, and academic writing, graduating summa cum laude. In addition to writing, he enjoys teaching photography and exploring unique locales.
With Maine’s Military Might, Thibodeau not only documents the military history of his home state but also contributes to a broader understanding of the interplay between geography and defense strategies in American history. The release of this book promises to engage readers with its rich narrative and insightful commentary on Maine’s military past.
