The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) officially opened a new railcar testing facility in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, on March 15, 2024. This facility will serve as the initial testing ground for all new subway cars before they enter service. It aims to enhance the efficiency of processing new subway cars, work locomotives, and other rolling stock, facilitating quicker onsite testing.

Located near the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, the facility is designed to accommodate rolling stock delivered by truck, rail, or boat. Once delivered, individual railcars can be linked for testing and commissioning on in-house tracks. After passing final inspections, these newly created trains will be connected to the subway network for further testing before they enter revenue service.

Janno Lieber, MTA Chair and Chief Executive Officer, highlighted the significance of this facility, stating, “Our historic $11 billion investment in rolling stock calls for a top-of-the-line new testing facility. Now we’re ready to start processing the 1,500-plus rail cars included in the Capital Plan, no matter how they’re delivered — by land or by water.”

As part of this initiative, the MTA is preparing to acquire a substantial number of modern subway cars. This includes hundreds of the R211 and R268 models, which are intended to replace the aging R46 and R68 subway cars that have been in service for decades. The rollout of the new R211 cars has already begun, with 750 units delivered to date and an additional 860 still scheduled for arrival. Moreover, plans include the purchase of 378 R268 subway cars, which offer similar amenities.

These modern subway cars will assist the MTA in upgrading subway lines to Communications-based Train Control (CBTC), recognized as the international gold standard for signal systems. All R211 and R268 subway cars will come equipped with technology that integrates seamlessly with CBTC signals. This advancement is expected to enhance the commuting experience for millions of daily riders by providing more reliable service, reducing delays, increasing train frequency, and minimizing waiting times.

The opening of this facility marks a significant milestone for the MTA, representing the first brand-new, full-scale subway car facility added since the Pitkin Yard began operations in 1948. This investment not only demonstrates the MTA’s commitment to modernizing its fleet but also emphasizes its dedication to improving public transportation across New York City.
