Honda’s Prologue Electric SUV Surges in Sales with Major Discounts

Honda has achieved significant success with its electric SUV, the Prologue, selling over 36,500 units in 2024, surpassing its total sales for the entire previous year. This surge is largely attributed to discounts exceeding $20,000, which have stimulated demand for the vehicle. Despite a broader decline in sales across the U.S. automotive market, Honda’s focus on electric and hybrid models has provided a crucial buffer against these trends.

In the third quarter of 2024, American Honda, which includes the Acura brand, reported sales of 358,848 vehicles, reflecting a 2% decrease compared to the same period last year. Nevertheless, the company’s electrified vehicles contributed to an overall increase of 4.1% in yearly sales for the Honda brand. Lance Woelfer, Vice President of Sales at American Honda, noted that the success of hybrid and electric models has helped the company navigate challenging market conditions.

Record Sales Boosted by Incentives

September marked a record month for the Honda Prologue, with over 4,500 units sold. The federal electric vehicle tax credit, which expired on September 30, 2024, played a critical role in driving demand for electrified vehicles. In addition to federal incentives, Honda offered substantial discounts that provided buyers with savings of up to $20,300 in certain states, particularly in California and other Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) states.

For instance, last month, Honda provided a $17,000 discount on the 2025 Prologue models nationwide, which included a $9,500 financing bonus alongside the $7,500 federal tax credit. This combination of incentives has made the Prologue highly appealing to potential buyers, especially as competition intensifies in the electric vehicle market.

Honda’s latest promotional offer, which is valid until November 3, 2024, includes $16,550 in lease cash in most regions of the U.S. The Prologue is further supported by additional financial incentives, with $5,000 dealer lease cash, $8,250 in Honda lease cash, and $3,300 in loyalty or conquest cash bonuses available to customers.

Future Plans for Honda’s Electric Lineup

Looking ahead, Honda has confirmed plans to launch the 2026 Prologue, although specific pricing details have yet to be disclosed. A notice sent to dealers, which was reviewed by CarsDirect, suggests that the 2026 model may debut with a lease or finance offer of $6,000 through Honda Financial Services. With an additional $3,000 conquest bonus potentially available, buyers could see savings of up to $9,000.

As competition grows, particularly with Hyundai announcing a price cut for the 2026 IONIQ 5 to approximately $35,000, Honda aims to match these aggressive pricing strategies to maintain its competitive edge in the electric vehicle market.

Honda’s proactive approach to electrification and its significant discounts are reshaping its market presence. As consumer interest in electric vehicles continues to rise, the company appears well-positioned to capture a larger share of the expanding electric SUV segment.
