Ford Bronco Gets Transformative Overland Camping Upgrade

The Ford Bronco has received a significant upgrade with the introduction of the new Ursa Minor Bronco B30 pop-up roof, transforming it into a capable overland camper. This innovative feature, which replaces the factory hard or soft top, includes a comfortable double bed and promises an enhanced camping experience for adventure enthusiasts.

The B30 roof is designed for the four-door Bronco variants, allowing campers to easily access a tented sleeping space from within the vehicle. This unique design incorporates a manual pop-up mechanism supported by an integrated strut system. Once raised, the roof reveals a sleeping area equipped with a standard 2-inch (5 cm) double mattress, measuring 86 x 49 inches (218 x 124 cm). Customers also have the option to upgrade to a more comfortable 3-inch-thick (7.6 cm) mattress.

Ursa Minor, based in Oregon, is known for its expertise in developing pop-up roofs for small vehicles, having begun its journey in 2007 with the Honda Element. The company has since expanded its offerings to include models for the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Transit Connect. The Bronco B30 marks a new chapter in Ursa’s history, designed specifically for the rugged demands of the Bronco.

Enhanced Features and Compatibility

The B30 roof adds approximately 7 inches (18 cm) to the Bronco’s height, making it lower in profile compared to Ursa’s previous J30 model for the Wrangler, which adds 10 inches (25 cm). A standard four-door Bronco stands at 73 inches (185 cm) tall, bringing the total height with the B30 to 80 inches (203 cm). This height allows the Bronco to fit into most standard 7-foot-high (213 cm) garages, although taller models like the Raptor, measuring 77.8 inches (198 cm), may need alternate parking arrangements.

In terms of weight, the B30 pop-top adds around 165 pounds (75 kg) to the vehicle’s curb weight, comparable to many two-person hardshell rooftop tents. This weight consideration makes the B30 not only lighter but also more seamlessly integrated than traditional rooftop tents, which often require additional crossbars or platform racks.

Although the B30 offers numerous advantages, it is important to note that it is not compatible with the two-door Bronco. Ursa Minor has indicated it has no plans to develop a pop-top for this model, nor does it offer one for the two-door Jeep Wrangler.

Pricing and Options

The Bronco B30 roof is currently available, with prices starting at US$11,500 before installation or shipping fees. Additional options include various roof rack packages, awning mounting points, interior lighting, electrical outlets, and custom color matching to suit individual vehicle aesthetics. Ursa Minor has also streamlined its operations, consolidating its California and Oregon facilities into a single location in Portland for all installations.

The installation of the B30 roof costs US$675, providing customers with a professional and efficient service. Ursa Minor is committed to meeting the needs of adventurous drivers, ensuring that the new B30 roof is compatible with all Bronco trims, including the off-road-focused Raptor and Everglades models.

With the introduction of the Bronco B30, outdoor enthusiasts can look forward to exploring diverse terrains—from forests to deserts—while enjoying the comfort of an integrated camping setup, making this upgrade an exciting development in the world of overland vehicles.
