Fixing iPhone SOS Only Mode: Step-by-Step Solutions

Your iPhone may unexpectedly enter “SOS Only” mode, indicating it is not connected to a cellular network. This status prevents users from making standard phone calls or sending text messages, although it still allows access to emergency services in several countries, including the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Understanding how to address this issue can ensure you stay connected when needed.
Understanding “SOS Only” Mode
When your device displays “SOS Only,” it signifies that it can only connect to emergency services, not standard networks. Other indicators such as “No Service” or “Searching” suggest a complete lack of carrier connection. If your iPhone switches to this mode during a trip, you might find it continues to display the SOS icon even after returning to an area with service.
One of the first steps to troubleshoot this issue involves reconnecting to your carrier. Navigate to Settings and toggle on Airplane Mode. After waiting for about 15 seconds, turn it off again. This can often reset the network connection and restore normal functionality. Alternatively, you can access Airplane Mode through the Control Center for quicker access.
Further Troubleshooting Steps
If toggling Airplane Mode does not resolve the issue, restarting your iPhone or iPad may help. Upon rebooting, there is a strong chance that the SOS mode will no longer be active. Additionally, ensure your device is running the latest version of iOS, as updates can address connectivity problems.
Should the SOS indication persist, the problem may lie with your carrier. Outages can occur, either locally or nationwide. For real-time updates, visit your carrier’s official website or check platforms like Downdetector.com. Social media accounts of your carrier can also provide timely information regarding service disruptions.
Travelers should verify their data roaming settings. If you’re outside your home country, enable data roaming by navigating to Settings > Cellular Data > Cellular Data Options and toggling the Data Roaming option on. If you own a dual-SIM iPhone, ensure that both lines are active by checking Settings > Cellular.
When in SOS mode, your device may temporarily connect to a rival network, acting outside of your regular carrier’s coverage. Apple has introduced a feature called Emergency SOS via Satellite for iPhone 14 and later models. This feature activates automatically when no cellular connection is available, allowing users to send emergency texts through satellite communication. The device will guide users on the necessary steps to take.
Users can also manually initiate an Emergency SOS call. For all countries except India, press and hold the side button along with either volume button simultaneously. After completing an Emergency SOS call, emergency contacts can receive a text message, which includes your location if accessible. Adjust your emergency settings under Settings > Emergency SOS to manage activation preferences and emergency contacts.
By following these steps, you can effectively troubleshoot and resolve the SOS Only mode on your iPhone, ensuring you remain connected and able to access emergency services when necessary.
