Croatian Firm Develops Battery Extender Boosting EV Range by 62 Miles

A new battery pack designed by the Croatian company EV Clinic can significantly enhance the driving range of electric vehicles (EVs). This innovative solution adds up to 62 miles of range to nearly any EV, utilizing advanced cells from Samsung SDI. Currently in prototype stage, the device aims to address the common issue of battery degradation that affects older electric vehicles.

Batteries naturally lose capacity over time, which means that even well-maintained electric cars often cannot achieve the same range as when they were new. Traditionally, the remedy for this problem has involved either replacing the entire battery pack or attempting repairs on faulty cells. Both options can be prohibitively expensive, particularly for aging models like the Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X, where replacement can cost between $15,000 and $25,000.

Instead of requiring a full battery replacement, the EV Clinic’s bespoke battery range extender is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing systems. This device fits into the trunk space of the Tesla Model S, preserving cargo capacity while providing an additional 17.1 kilowatt-hours of usable energy. The prototype includes several key components: new prismatic cells organized in four modules, a dedicated battery management system (BMS), and a custom cooling system featuring a pump sourced from the Tesla Model S.

The installation process involves connecting the range extender in parallel with the vehicle’s original battery using Rapid Mate connectors. This parallel wiring reduces internal resistance, allowing for improved charging performance. Although the maximum power input remains unchanged, the new setup enhances the charging curve, leading to faster charging times.

Each prototype also incorporates a diagnostics module and software that enables vehicle owners to monitor the status of the range extender easily. In the event of a malfunction, the device can disconnect itself from the high-voltage system, ensuring safety.

Presently, the first version of this prototype is tailored for the Tesla Model S equipped with an 85 kWh battery pack. However, future iterations are expected to cater to additional models, including the 75 kWh Teslas and popular vehicles like the Volkswagen e-Golf, Nissan Leaf, and Smart EV.

While the pricing details have yet to be announced, the range extender is anticipated to present a more economical alternative compared to full battery replacements. As the demand for sustainable transportation solutions continues to grow, innovations such as this bespoke battery pack could significantly extend the lifespan of existing electric vehicles and enhance their utility for consumers.
