Young Innovators Reject Elon Musk’s Millions for AI Revolution
Young AI researchers William Chen and Guan Wang have turned down a multimillion-dollar offer from Elon Musk to pursue their own groundbreaking artificial intelligence initiative, Sapient Intelligence. The pair, both 22, chose to focus on developing a new AI model rather than aligning with Musk’s company, xAI, which recognized their potential.
Chen and Wang first gained attention for their small large-language model (LLM) named OpenChat, created during their studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing. This model utilized reinforcement learning to improve its capabilities, capturing interest in academic circles. Musk’s offer, reportedly generous, aimed to integrate their talents into his vision for advanced AI. However, the duo opted to refine their own architecture, which led to the creation of Sapient Intelligence.
Building a New AI Paradigm
Sapient Intelligence is described as a “brain-inspired” reasoning system, and it has already performed better than some leading AI systems in abstract reasoning tests. According to a report by Fortune, Chen and Wang are optimistic that their work could represent a significant step toward achieving “artificial general intelligence” (AGI)—a form of machine intelligence that matches or surpasses human cognitive abilities.
The journey for Chen and Wang began in Michigan, where they met in high school and bonded over a shared passion for AI and optimization. Their collaboration continued at Tsinghua University, where they faced academic challenges but received encouragement from their professors. This support propelled them toward their innovative breakthrough.
Currently, the team is preparing to establish a U.S. office, secure additional funding, and launch a second version of their model. Chen and Wang emphasize that enabling a model to learn continuously without the need for retraining represents a pivotal advancement in AI technology.
