TEDx Gary Returns to Showcase Innovative Ideas on October 18

The eighth installment of TEDx Gary is set to take place on October 18, 2023, at Indiana University Northwest, located at 65 W. 33rd Ave. The event will commence at 18:00 in the Bergland Auditorium at Savannah Hall. This year’s theme, “Space and Expectation,” will guide a series of short talks, each lasting no more than 18 minutes.
Organized by the married couple, Jeffrey and McKenya Smith, TEDx Gary was launched in 2020 with the theme “Using What You Have to Get What You Want.” The event gained significant recognition last year, particularly for Dr. Ravi Iyer‘s talk titled “The Power of Intentional Focus,” which became the most viewed TEDx talk of 2022, amassing over 2.4 million views.
Dynamic Speakers from Diverse Backgrounds
This year’s lineup features a remarkable array of speakers, including Paulina Johnson from Detroit, Dr. Akemi Bailey Haynie, Dr. Kenichi Haynie, and Masayoshi Haynie from Chicago, alongside attorneys Michael and Shelice Tolbert from Gary. Other notable speakers include Sandra Carr from Gary, Kristy Carreon from Crown Point, Kristine Szabo from Cannes, France, Crystal Melton from Gary, Robert Ordway from Indianapolis, and Dr. Altovise Nicole Ferguson from Gary.
“The evening will be filled with ideas worth sharing, and we are excited to be back on the campus of Indiana University Northwest,” said McKenya Dilworth Smith. She highlighted the diverse experiences of the speakers, which range from seasoned professionals to creative artists, including a survivor of the Hiroshima attack.
Topics will cover a wide spectrum, from optimizing social media algorithms to creating safe spaces in chaotic environments.
Impact on the Local Community and Future Plans
Jeffrey Smith noted that the event is poised to benefit the local economy in Gary and the surrounding region. “Some speakers are traveling from Indianapolis, Michigan, and even France to participate, contributing to local businesses by staying at nearby Airbnbs, dining at restaurants, and supporting small shops,” he explained.
Since its inception, more than 35 speakers have graced the TEDx Gary stage, all aiming to foster innovation and creativity. “Our goal is to challenge, provoke, and move Gary forward,” McKenya added. The event seeks to present a positive narrative about the city, showcasing its potential and resilience.
Looking ahead, TEDx Gary is already planning future events. McKenya Smith invited prospective speakers to apply, stating, “We have a fairly straightforward application process that usually opens in March and closes on May 16.” This commitment to community engagement ensures that TEDx Gary will continue to be a platform for ideas that inspire and connect people.
