A tragic shooting in Midtown Manhattan on March 25, 2024, claimed the life of Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old officer with the New York Police Department (NYPD). The incident occurred when a gunman, identified as Shane Devon Tamura, opened fire in the lobby of the 345 Park Avenue office tower, killing four individuals, including Islam, who was off-duty but in uniform at the time.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch described Islam as a hero during a news conference on the same evening. “He was doing the job that we asked him to do,” Tisch stated. “He put himself in harm’s way; he made the ultimate sacrifice—shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise he made to this city.”

Islam served with the NYPD’s 47th precinct in the Bronx for three and a half years. He leaves behind two young sons and a pregnant wife, who is expecting their third child. Mayor Eric Adams, who met with Islam’s family after the shooting, praised the officer’s dedication, saying, “He was a hero, and we admire him for putting his life on the line.” Adams further emphasized Islam’s character, noting that he was a person of faith who embodied the spirit of New York.

The shooting unfolded around 17:30 local time. Authorities reported that Tamura shot five people in total, including Islam, before turning the gun on himself. One person remains in critical but stable condition as investigations continue.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul and law enforcement agencies across the country, including those as far away as Los Angeles, expressed their condolences to Islam’s family. The NYPD shared on social media, “Police Officer Didarul Islam represented the very best of our department. He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today. We join in prayer during this time of incomprehensible pain.”

The community is mourning the loss of an officer who dedicated his life to public service. Islam is remembered not only for his commitment to law enforcement but also for his role as a father and husband. His legacy continues to resonate with colleagues and residents alike, reflecting the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of many.
