The Pride of the Vikings Band and Color Guard from Valencia High School secured multiple accolades at the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association’s (SCSBOA) “Keeping the Music Alive” Field Show Tournament held at Oxnard High School. Under the leadership of Kelvin Flores, the band achieved an impressive score of 79.5 in the Division 2A competition, showcasing their exemplary performance.

Their strong execution and teamwork not only earned them a first-place finish in the Division 2A Band category but also led to several sweepstakes trophies. “I am incredibly proud of our students, parents, and staff for their hard work, dedication, and teamwork,” Flores stated. He emphasized that their commitment to excellence continually elevates the program and inspires those around them. Following this success, the Pride of the Vikings is set to enter the SCSBOA Championship Prelims, ranked No. 1 in their division.

The tournament results highlighted the band’s remarkable achievements, including:
– First Place in Division 2A Band
– Second Place in Division 2A Percussion
– Color Guard Sweepstakes
– General Effect Sweepstakes
– Visual Effect Sweepstakes

In addition, Malakai Hatamian was awarded the Drill Down Sweepstakes, a competitive elimination game based on quick marching commands.

The band’s upcoming show for 2025, titled “Transcendence,” will take audiences on a symbolic journey from light to darkness within a cathedral. The performance begins with a serene portrayal of the interior, followed by a focus on stained glass, symbolizing the sacredness found in imperfection. The final movement shifts to a darker tone, featuring protective gargoyles that represent ancient fears, wisdom, and strength.

Musically, “Transcendence” integrates a diverse score, blending classical and rock elements. Selections include J.S. Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor,” “Little Fugue in G Minor,” Richard Wagner’s “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral,” and The Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black.”

The Pride of the Vikings’ recent triumph underscores their dedication and talent, setting a promising stage for their future performances.
