Upper Darby Police Lieutenant Lania Stevens received the prestigious Governor’s Keystone Award from Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro on March 12, 2024. The award ceremony took place at the newly refurbished Governors Mansion, which had recently undergone restoration following an arson attack in April 2023. This recognition honors individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities through service and leadership.

During the event, Shapiro highlighted the impact of the honorees, stating, “You’re the people who caught our eye along the way … and are making a real difference. You are the people inspiring fellow Pennsylvanians.” The award recognized Stevens alongside seven other individuals and two groups for their extraordinary efforts in community engagement and service.

Trailblazing Achievements and Community Impact

Stevens is notably the first Black female lieutenant in the history of the Upper Darby Police Department. She previously made history as the first Black female sergeant and the first African American woman officer within the department. In addition to her law enforcement role, Stevens serves as vice president of the Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County, where she actively works to support victims of domestic violence and promote community education.

Former Philadelphia 76ers broadcaster Marc Zumoff served as the emcee for the evening, commending Stevens for her commitment to building bridges between the police force and the community. “It is tough work building bridges between a community and its police force, but this woman does that, while at the same time making history,” Zumoff remarked. “Community engagement is at the heart of her work.”

Stevens is also involved in mentoring local fifth graders through the department’s youth program, which aims to inspire the next generation of public servants.

Recognition and Support from Local Leaders

The event was attended by several local officials, including Upper Darby Mayor Ed Brown, Chief Administrative Officer Crandall Jones, and Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt. Brown expressed his pride in Stevens’ achievements, noting that the Keystone Award is only presented to 17 recipients statewide. “It recognizes individuals who make a significant difference in their communities,” he said.

Brown further emphasized Stevens’ leadership in the Teens and Police Service (TAPS) Program, which fosters better relationships between law enforcement and youth. “We are proud to have her represent Upper Darby Township,” he added.

Bernhardt echoed this sentiment, stating, “I couldn’t be prouder of the men and women who serve this community every day. Lt. Stevens’ recognition by Gov. Shapiro is a tremendous honor and a reflection of her dedication, professionalism, and commitment to the people and community of Upper Darby.” He noted that the award also reflects the hard work of the entire department, highlighting their commitment to training and preparing officers to the highest standards.

The ceremony not only celebrated Stevens’ individual accomplishments but also underscored the importance of community engagement in law enforcement. Governor Shapiro’s remarks about the vision of William Penn for an open and tolerant society resonated throughout the event, emphasizing the collective efforts required to build a more just community.
