In a thrilling finish at Stanford Stadium on September 27, 2024, quarterback Ben Gulbranson sparked a remarkable turnaround, leading the Stanford Cardinal to a 30-29 victory over the San Jose State Spartans. This win marked a significant milestone for Gulbranson, who had struggled in his first two games, throwing for just 251 yards with three interceptions and no touchdowns.

Gulbranson, an Oregon State transfer, stepped up when it mattered most, completing 29 of 43 passes for an impressive 444 yards—the third-highest total in Stanford history. His standout performance included two touchdown passes and no interceptions, showcasing his growth and potential as the team progresses through the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) schedule.

Turning Point in the Game

The defining moment of the game occurred in the final two minutes when Gulbranson orchestrated an 80-yard touchdown drive. Facing a crucial fourth-and-10 from their own 41-yard line with just 1:18 remaining, Gulbranson connected with wide receiver Caden High for a critical 34-yard gain. The offensive line’s protection allowed Gulbranson to make this pivotal throw, demonstrating both his poise and the team’s preparedness.

“Huge play,” said interim coach Frank Reich. “Ben just had all the poise in the world to sit in there, to trust his guys.”

Following the completion to High, Gulbranson continued to move the chains, hitting CJ Williams for additional gains before Sedrick Irvin rushed into the end zone with just 19 seconds left, sealing the victory and avenging last year’s last-minute loss to San Jose State.

Gulbranson’s Emergence and Team Progress

Over the past three games, Gulbranson has significantly improved his performance, amassing 916 yards and maintaining a completion rate of 66%. He has thrown six touchdowns without any interceptions, earning praise from coaches and teammates alike. “Every game he’s gotten better and better,” Reich noted, emphasizing Gulbranson’s hard work and adaptability after joining the program only in June.

His connection with Williams has become a key asset for the Cardinal offense, with Williams achieving over 100 receiving yards in back-to-back games. High also contributed to the team’s success with five receptions for 110 yards, alongside impactful plays from receivers Bryce Farrell and Micah Ford.

The Cardinal’s victory over San Jose State not only boosts their confidence but also positions them favorably heading into the heart of their ACC schedule, beginning on October 11 against Southern Methodist University (SMU). With a three-game home winning streak, the team aims to build momentum and demonstrate their competitiveness against stronger opponents like Miami, Florida State, and Notre Dame in the coming weeks.

Reich expressed pride in the team’s progress, stating, “I think to have the two big wins at home is a good statement to make to show our fans, students here, everybody who is about Stanford football that we’re going to be tough to beat at home.”

As the season continues, Stanford’s journey will hinge on maintaining this upward trajectory, with Gulbranson emerging as a pivotal figure in their offensive strategy. The Cardinal look forward to building on their success and solidifying their standing in the ACC.
