Sequoia Park Zoo Unveils Red Panda Habitat Ahead of Celebration

Sequoia Park Zoo in California is marking International Red Panda Day this September with a significant donation of $1,000 to the Red Panda Network. This nonprofit organization focuses on the conservation of wild red pandas and their habitats by engaging and educating local communities. As part of its ongoing commitment to conservation, the zoo allocates fifty cents from every admission directly to field efforts aimed at protecting these endangered animals.
“Visitors love red pandas for their charismatic personalities and iconic appearance,” said Ruth Mock, Sequoia Park Zoo’s Director of Conservation and Research. “But scientists and conservationists also appreciate the red panda for its role as an umbrella species. Protecting this one endangered species can help preserve an entire ecosystem of animals, plants, and fungi.”
Red pandas inhabit high-altitude forests that extend from China to India. They serve as an umbrella species for the Eastern Himalayan broadleaf ecosystem, which is home to a rich array of wildlife, including the Himalayan goral, marbled cat, Himalayan black bear, and Chinese pangolin.
Exciting Habitat Renovation Unveiled
At Sequoia Park Zoo, a red panda named Saffron has been temporarily housed behind the scenes during a major habitat renovation. This project has been made possible thanks to a grant from the Christine and Jalmer Berg Foundation and community contributions to the Red Panda Improvement Project. The new habitat is expected to open by the end of October 2023.
“The crew has done a beautiful job, and we are so excited for Saffron to enjoy it,” stated Jim Campbell-Spickler, the zoo’s director. As a special feature for guests attending the upcoming OktoBEARfest, the zoo will offer a sneak peek of the habitat. The event will include a mural painted live by the Mural Man and his team, adding an artistic element to the celebration.
As the completion of the habitat nears, attendees of OktoBEARfest will have the chance to explore the newly expanded spaces, interact with zoo staff, and learn about animal care practices at the zoo. OktoBEARfest, presented by Humboldt Cider Company, is scheduled for October 11, 2023, from 16:00 to 19:00. Note that guests under 21 will not be admitted, and valid identification is required for entry. Tickets and further details can be found at oktobearfest.brownpapertickets.com.
This celebration not only highlights the zoo’s dedication to animal welfare but also emphasizes the importance of community involvement in conservation efforts. Through events like OktoBEARfest and partnerships with organizations such as the Red Panda Network, Sequoia Park Zoo continues to play a vital role in the global effort to protect endangered species and their habitats.
