Protect Your Lawn: 3 Essential Steps Before Vacation

As summer approaches, many individuals are preparing for vacations, whether jetting off to distant locations or enjoying a staycation. However, before leaving, it is crucial to ensure that your lawn remains healthy and vibrant. Homeowners can avoid returning to a yard plagued by dry grass and wilting plants by following a few simple steps, according to lawn care expert Doug O’Connor from DeerFencing.com.
Trim Your Grass for Health
One of the first steps for lawn care is to give your grass a pre-vacation trim. While it might be tempting to skip mowing just before leaving, O’Connor recommends cutting the grass about a day prior to departure. This practice helps maintain lawn health without causing undue stress.
“Taking off just the top third of the grass blade is perfect,” O’Connor states. “It reduces growth without stressing the lawn. If you cut it too short, you might come home to brown patches instead of green grass.”
A proper trim not only reduces the risk of sun damage but also discourages pests and unsightly weeds from taking root.
Implement Smart Watering Solutions
When planning a vacation, setting up an efficient watering schedule is vital. Automated solutions such as smart sprinkler systems can alleviate the worry of over- or underwatering. These devices can be programmed via an app, allowing homeowners to customize watering schedules based on real-time weather conditions.
“The latest smart sprinklers can check local weather forecasts and adjust watering accordingly,” O’Connor explains. “They won’t run during rainstorms, saving water and preventing overwatering, which can be just as harmful as underwatering.”
For those who prefer a simpler option, enlisting a trusted neighbor to assist with watering can also work. Moreover, investing in a basic automatic sprinkler system with a timer can provide a reliable solution for frequent travelers.
The Rachio smart sprinkler controller is a notable option, featuring an app that allows users to track historical data and adjust schedules for optimal lawn care.
Fertilize Wisely Before You Leave
While the late summer months are typically ideal for fertilizing, applying a slow-release fertilizer prior to vacation can be beneficial. O’Connor advises homeowners to do this about a week before departure, providing nutrients that gradually release and support steady growth.
“Just don’t be tempted to use quick-release products right before vacation,” he cautions. “Those will just make your grass grow faster while you’re away, which is exactly what you don’t want!”
Opting for a fertilizer tailored to your lawn’s specific needs can further enhance its health. For instance, nitrogen promotes a lush green lawn, phosphorus supports root development, while potassium aids overall plant health and resilience against stress.
By following these essential steps, homeowners can enjoy their vacations knowing their lawns are well cared for. With a little effort before departure, it’s possible to return to a thriving, green yard, eliminating the stress of post-vacation lawn recovery.
