Pittsburgh Group Enhances Legal Support for Immigrants Amid Anxiety

A refugee resettlement organization in Pittsburgh, known as Hello Neighbor, is expanding its immigration legal services to address growing concerns among immigrants. This initiative comes in response to heightened anxiety over the Trump administration’s intensified deportation efforts, which have led to increased fear among undocumented individuals and even some citizens.

Previously, Hello Neighbor was restricted to assisting only those individuals it had directly resettled. With new funding, the organization can now extend its services to a broader community of immigrants. Sloane Davidson, the founder of Hello Neighbor, highlighted that for many immigrants, obtaining citizenship has not always been a priority due to the associated costs and lengthy processes. However, she noted a shift in urgency as the administration’s policies disproportionately target undocumented immigrants, resulting in situations where lawful citizens have also been apprehended.

According to an investigation by ProPublica, over 170 citizens have been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Davidson remarked, “They were living good lives. They’re happy here. They’re doing everything right. They just didn’t see the need, but they see the need now because they’re scared.”

The primary service currently requested by individuals is assistance with Green Card applications. Davidson explained, “In this administration, if you have a Green Card, you’re going to be able to receive more services; there’s maybe less of a target on your back.” Recognizing this critical need, Hello Neighbor has prioritized expanding its legal support.

Broader Community Support and Services Offered

Even before the current administration took office, Hello Neighbor had been evaluating the needs of the community and identifying gaps in existing services. The organization spent nearly a year researching what services were available through other providers and connecting with resettlement agencies nationwide to adopt best practices. As a result of this groundwork, they are now equipped to assist with various immigration-related matters.

Individuals seeking help can approach Hello Neighbor for support with applications for Green Cards, citizenship, marriage-based immigrant visa petitions, and petitions for family reunification. The services are available on a sliding scale, based on income, ensuring accessibility for those in need.

Despite the expansion, the organization cannot process asylum applications, represent clients in removal proceedings, manage family law matters, or assist unaccompanied minors, detainment defense, or employment visas. Initial consultations are offered free of charge, providing a welcoming environment for those seeking guidance.

Davidson emphasized, “If people have questions, we’re a safe space. They can come, make an appointment, and talk and see.” This approach not only provides immediate assistance but also helps the organization gain a deeper understanding of the community’s evolving needs.

Hello Neighbor’s commitment to supporting immigrants amidst a climate of fear and uncertainty illustrates the growing importance of community organizations in navigating the complexities of immigration law. As the political landscape continues to shift, the role of such groups will likely remain vital in ensuring that immigrants have access to the resources they need to thrive.
