Philadelphia’s Flavor Spot Restaurant Cited for Multiple Health Violations
The Flavor Spot, a Jamaican restaurant located at 6417 Rising Sun Avenue in Philadelphia, was cited for multiple health code violations during a routine inspection conducted on September 12, 2025. Health inspectors identified issues including vermin activity, improper food labeling, and unsanitary conditions that require immediate attention.
During the inspection, officials noted a troubling presence of flies throughout the facility. A significant observation was a large block of ice defrosting in the hand-wash sink located in the basement, which poses a sanitation risk. Additionally, inspectors found that the hand-wash sinks in both the upstairs restroom and downstairs prep area lacked necessary paper towels, a critical component for maintaining hygiene.
The inspection report highlighted that potentially hazardous ready-to-eat foods, prepared on-site and stored for more than 48 hours, were present in multiple refrigeration units without proper date marking. This oversight can compromise food safety standards. Furthermore, pre-made sauces and prepackaged cakes displayed in the front service area were found to be missing required labeling information, raising further concerns about compliance with health regulations.
Inspectors also discovered non-compliance with employee hygiene protocols. One food employee was not wearing a hair restraint, which is essential for preventing contamination. Moist wiping cloths were left on counters instead of stored in a sanitizing solution, which is a violation of proper sanitation practices.
In the basement preparation area, inspectors observed several maintenance issues that could contribute to unsanitary conditions. Raw wood was used to support refrigeration units, and plastic crates were inappropriately utilized for both elevation and storage purposes. Moreover, one of the refrigerators was noted to be in disrepair, and there was a lack of an approved backflow prevention device on the utility sink, which poses a risk of backflow contamination.
The report further detailed hard-to-clean ceiling surfaces in the customer seating area, which could lead to dust accumulation and hinder sanitation efforts. Missing ceiling tiles in the basement preparation area exposed the overhead structure, while holes and gaps around the gas meter raised concerns about potential pest entry.
Health inspectors have mandated that The Flavor Spot rectify all violations before a follow-up inspection can occur. Failure to address these issues may lead to the revocation of the restaurant’s health license, significantly impacting its ability to operate.
The Flavor Spot is known for its Jamaican specialties, such as the ‘Full a Spice’ jerk chicken and ‘Country Style’ curry goat. As the establishment works to resolve these critical health concerns, its reputation and continued service to the community hang in the balance.
