Pastor Nadia Adonai Follows Faith Journey from Iraq to Freedom

Rev. Nadia Adonai, a pastor who fled religious persecution in Iraq, has found the freedom to practice her faith in the United States. Growing up in Baghdad, she experienced a rich spiritual upbringing, shaped by her Georgian mother and Assyrian father. Her memories are filled with moments of prayer and devotion, particularly with her grandmother, who would pray in their garden early each morning.
As a teenager, Adonai was immersed in her faith while attending a Catholic school connected to the parish of St. George, known for its devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. “The education was excellent, and the nuns were passionate about teaching,” she recalled. However, as the political environment shifted and Shia Islam gained dominance, openly expressing her Christian beliefs became increasingly perilous.
A Journey Through Adversity
After completing her education in television journalism, Adonai’s career took her across the Middle East and into Russia, where she reported on various issues. Despite her professional success, she faced escalating dangers. One incident during Ramadan forced her to wear a hijab, a moment that left her distraught. “I started crying and praying, telling God, ‘I’m sorry; it’s not me,’” she recounted, realizing the constraints on her faith.
As violence surged against Christians in Iraq, many were killed or fled. Adonai’s family, like many others, sought refuge. She eventually moved to Moscow, where she discovered that the oppressive legacy of Communist rule still lingered. Her foreign status made her a target for harassment, and she faced numerous threats, including bombings at her apartment.
“They threatened me and bombed my apartment three times because I was a Christian and a journalist,” she said. After enduring these harrowing experiences, Adonai and her family migrated to the United States, with her two grown children remaining in the Middle East.
Embracing a New Life in America
Upon arriving in the United States, Adonai transitioned from journalism to ministry. “When I came here, I became a pastor, and there was no more TV news,” she explained. In 2014, she became a U.S. citizen and adopted the name Adonai, which she felt symbolized a fresh start. “The Lord gave me this name to renounce everything old and begin anew,” she said.
Adonai pursued theological studies and received her pastor certificate, viewing her new life as a miracle. “I saw freedom of religion, worship, and speech,” she stated, expressing her gratitude for the liberties available in her new home. With a heart for ministry, she engages in preaching, nursing home visits, and leading an online ministry aimed at supporting underground Christians in the Middle East.
Through her online outreach, she has seen conversions to Christianity, including a recent instance where a family accepted Christ through her ministry. Adonai’s commitment to her faith shines through in her interactions, as she emphasizes the importance of gratitude for the freedoms enjoyed in the U.S.
“I tell them, ‘You have to thank the Lord for this country,’” she said, encouraging others to appreciate their daily blessings, such as access to clean water and food. Her life’s mission is to fulfill the biblical command to “go and make disciples” of all nations, sharing hope with those burdened by various struggles.
Adonai’s inspiring story resonates with many, including members of her congregation. Kim Rude, who met Adonai at Grace Communion International in Dilworth, Minnesota, praised her resilience and faith. “She’s been through an awful lot… and the faith that she has in God to get her through things is very inspiring,” Rude said.
Pastor Richard Siedschlag, another member of the church, described Adonai’s sermons as vibrant and passionate, reflecting her life experiences and faith journey. “Her message seems focused on God’s provision and protection—something she’s lived,” he noted.
In a world where many face oppression for their beliefs, Adonai’s journey exemplifies the power of faith and the importance of freedom. Her story serves as a reminder that, even in the darkest times, hope and renewal are possible through faith and community support.
